Spirit add Jasmyne Spencer to round out first NWSL roster PDF Print E-mail

Skyy Anderson waived, keeping starting roster at 18

--GERMANTOWN, Md. (April 9, 2013) -- The Washington Spirit have signed forward Jasmyne Spencer, finalizing the roster in advance of their National Women's Soccer League season opener at the Boston Breakers on April 14, pending final league approval of required paperwork.

Spencer, whom the Boston Breakers chose in the fourth round of the NWSL Supplemental Draft earlier this year, will bring a scoring touch to the Spirit attack that she honed in college at Maryland and while playing overseas with the Danish club Brøndby.

The 22-year-old finished her career with the Terrapins ranked among the top 10 in school history for goals, points, shots and game-winning goals, and while in Denmark, she played in two UEFA Women's Champions League Matches.

"We're excited to see what Jasmyne will add to our offense," Spirit coach Mike Jorden said. "She's a very talented young player, and we expect her to be a valuable part of our attack as we begin NWSL play."

In addition, the Spirit will be waiving defender Skyy Anderson as soon as Spencer's contract paperwork is complete, keeping the team in compliance with the NWSL minimum roster requirements of 18.

The Spirit are composed of six players allocated from national teams: Americans Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris and Lori Lindsey; Canadians Robyn Gayle and Diana Matheson; and Mexico's Teresa "Lupita" Worbis. The team added to its list of players with international experience by signing Canadian defender Candace Chapman.

Three players joined through the NWSL College Draft: Florida State forward Tiffany McCarty, Virginia forward Caroline Miller and Dayton midfielder Colleen Williams. Florida midfielder Holly King was also drafted and will join the franchise this week in hopes of earning a contract after rearranging her spring semester.

The Spirit added Stephanie Ochs and Tori Huster through the NWSL Supplemental Draft, then signed five more through the league's free agent and discovery players process to round out the roster: Domenica Hodak, Kika Toulouse, Ingrid Wells, Julia Roberts and Chantel Jones. Additional signings are pending conclusion of the European playing seasons through May and June and will be announced as contracts are completed.

After beginning their season at Boston this Sunday, the Spirit will return to the D.C. area for their home opener on April 20 against the Western NY Flash and U.S. star Abby Wambach. The home side of the stadium at the Maryland SoccerPlex has nearly sold out for that match, but remaining tickets for that and all other home games can be purchased through tickets.washingtonspirit.com or by calling 301-337-8579.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Soccer announced today that RFK Stadium will host the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) versus Germany in a Centennial Celebration Match on Saturday, June 2 at 2:30 pm. ET. The Centennial Celebration Match is part of U.S. Soccer’s 100-year anniversary celebration in 2013.

RFK Stadium will host the USMNT for the 21st time. Overall, the USA is 13-3-4 at RFK Stadium, and in the midst of a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1). The USMNT last played at RFK against Jamaica, earning a 2-0 victory on June 19, 2011, and advancing to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

“We take great pride in the vast and colorful soccer history at RFK Stadium, and the U.S. Men’s National Team has greatly contributed to this legacy,” said Erik A. Moses, managing director of Events DC’s Sports and Entertainment Division. “With its legendary bouncy seats and passionate soccer atmosphere, RFK is the perfect setting for U.S. Soccer’s Centennial Celebration Match, and we look forward to a competitive match this June.”

Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Release - 3.19.13

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Patriot League will be on display during another special event this weekend as Colgate and Navy square off in a critical contest Saturday at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on ESPNU.

The contest is slated for 2 p.m., with Virginia and Johns Hopkins battling in the second half of the doubleheader at approximately 4:30 p.m.

It's the third straight weekend the League has at least one team involved in a special event. Lehigh downed Penn State March 9 at the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. On Sunday, Holy Cross posted a win over Navy for the first time in program history and Colgate defeated Michigan in the inaugural Metropolitan Lacrosse Classic at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y.

Before the Raiders and Mids meet this weekend, there are two important contests worth watching this week. No. 15/16 Bucknell visits second-ranked and unbeaten Cornell Tuesday at 4 p.m., while No. 16/15 Lehigh hosts Massachusetts Wednesday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU. Bucknell has another non-League game this weekend when it visits No. 20/20 Albany Saturday.

League play resumes this weekend. In addition to Colgate-Navy in Baltimore, Army will host Lafayette at noon and Lehigh will visit Holy Cross at 3 p.m.

The Crusaders were originally scheduled to visit Vermont Tuesday, but a storm forecasted to drop up to a foot of snow in New England forced the game's postponement. Holy Cross will visit the Catamounts next Tuesday instead.

PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN'S LACROSSE QUICK HITS

• Bucknell puts its five-game win streak on the line Tuesday afternoon at No. 2/2 Cornell. The Big Red are the third top-20 teams the Bison are playing in their last four outings.

• Colgate senior Peter Baum has jumped in front of Army's Garrett Thul for the League's career goals lead. Baum has 153 to Thul's 144.

• Baum has moved up to fourth all-time in League annals in points with 210.

• Holy Cross' 7-5 win over Navy Sunday was its first against the Mids in 10 tries. Their series began when Navy joined the Patriot League in 2004.

• Home teams have won three of the first five League battles so far this spring.

• Colgate's win over Michigan Sunday lifted the League to 24-17 in non-League battles.

• Army's Alex Newsome and Lafayette's Brian Bock are tied for the League lead with six man-up goals.

• Bucknell is up to fourth in the nation in scoring defense (6.86) and leads Division I in turnovers (11.57 per game).

Patriot League Notebook

COLGATE-NAVY IN BALTIMORE

This year's annual tilt between Colgate and Navy is the first half of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPNU, followed by Virginia and Johns Hopkins at approximately 4:30 p.m. In addition to giving a national stage to defending Tewaaraton and Enners awards winner Peter Baum, the event will put a critical Patriot League contest on the national stage. Colgate looks to tie Bucknell at the top of the standings at 2-0, while Navy seeks to avoid dropping to 1-3.

LEHIGH-UMASS GETS ESPN TREATMENT

Lehigh returns home to host Massachusetts Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU as the network's Game of the Week. The contest pits two of the biggest stories from last year, as Lehigh claimed its first Patriot League Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time, while the Minutemen went unbeaten in the regular season before falling to (ironically) Colgate in the NCAA Tournament's first round.

BAUM BACK AT IT

With nine goals and 11 points last week, Colgate senior Peter Baum is showing the same form that delivered him the Tewaaraton and Enners trophies last season. The Portland, Ore., native is 12th in the country (and second in the League) in points per game (4.25) and ninth and second, respectively, in goals (2.88).

HUGE FOR HOLY CROSS

Holy Cross' weekend will go down as one to remember. The Crusaders took on Navy in the first game of the inaugural Metropolitan Lacrosse Classic Sunday, the first lacrosse contest to take place inside a Major League Baseball stadium since 1971. The programs battled for 60 minutes before Holy Cross came away with a 7-5 victory in front of nearly 16,000 spectators at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y. It was the Crusaders' first win over the Mids in 10 tries. Holy Cross returns home to host Lehigh in another big League contest Saturday afternoon.

CBS SPORTS NETWORK SCHEDULE ON THE HORIZON

The first of nine contests nationally televised on CBS Sports Network to feature Patriot League teams is just a week away. Army will visit Colgate Sunday, March 31 at noon inside Andy Kerr Stadium to kick off the League's schedule on its official broadcast partner. It will begin a stretch of six consecutive weeks that League teams will be featured on CBS Sports Network. Following Army-Colgate, Navy will host Maryland Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m. before Lehigh entertains Colgate Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. on CBS Sports Network.

FLIBOTTE FRONTS BISON

It's been quite a season already for Bucknell freshman Thomas Flibotte, who has picked up a pair of Rookie of the Week nods and garnered his first career Offensive Player of the Week award Monday. The Cohasset, Mass., native scored nine goals last week, including six against then-No. 13 Drexel, to lead the Bison's offensive charge in two victories. He also netted a hat trick in a League win Saturday at Lafayette. Flibotte is now third in the League averaging 2.71 goals per game, and is making the most of teaming with sophomore David Dickson, who leads the League in assists (3.14).

LEHIGH CAST AS THE FAVORITE

With 69 points and nine first-place votes, Lehigh was chosen as the favorite in Patriot League men's lacrosse in 2013 by the League's head coaches and sports information directors. Colgate, which hosted last year's tournament as the No. 1 seed, finished close behind in second with 65 points and the remaining five first-place ballots. Both teams made the NCAA Tournament, with Colgate capturing an at-large berth.

INTRODUCING JIM ROGALSKI

Lafayette filled its coaching vacancy over the summer by hiring Jim Rogalski, who had amassed an 18-15 record the previous two seasons at Scranton, and guided the program to a conference championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2011. Rogalski brings a wealth of experience to Lafayette, as he spent six seasons on the staff at Rutgers, and has held positions at several other institutions like Drexel, Washington & Lee and Goucher College. Lafayette is 2-6 and visits Army Saturday.

Patriot League Weekly Awards (3.11-3.17)

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

THOMAS FLIBOTTE, BUCKNELL Fr., M, Cohasset, Mass.

Flibotte had a huge week to help the Bison capture victories over nationally-ranked Drexel and Patriot League foe Lafayette. The freshman from Cohasset, Mass., started Tuesday by tying the school freshman record with six goals in a 17-8 rout of Drexel. He forced three turnovers and picked up three groundballs to go with his offensive output. Flibotte struck again Saturday at Lafayette with three more goals and a pair of groundballs in a 13-6 win over the Leopards. He now has a team-high 19 markers on the season.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MATT WARD, HOLY CROSS Sr., LSM, Massapequa, N.Y.

It was quite the homecoming for Ward, who led Holy Cross with six caused turnovers and was second on the club with five groundballs in the Crusaders' 7-5 win over Navy in the first half of Sunday's Metropolitan Lacrosse Classic at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y. Playing just 30 miles from home, the senior long pole helped Holy Cross earn its first victory over the Mids in 10 tries.

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

KYLE FEENEY, BUCKNELL Sr., GK, Greenwich, Conn.

Feeney posted a pair of 10-save outings last week for the Bison in two victories. He stopped 10 in Tuesday's 17-8 drubbing of Drexel and added another 10 stops and posted a .625 save percentage in Saturday's 13-6 League victory at Lafayette. For the week Feeney made 20 saves and ended up with a .588 save percentage in backstopping the Bison back into both national polls. A week after appearing at No. 18 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, Bucknell is up to No. 16 in those rankings and 15th in the USILA coaches voting.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

MICHAEL ORTLIEB, HOLY CROSS Fr., GK, Newport Beach, Calif.

Ortlieb, making just his third career start, backstopped Holy Cross to a 7-5 victory over Navy Sunday at Citi Field. He made 12 saves in the contest to help stymie any offensive opportunity the Mids created in trying to rally from the two-goal deficit. Navy peppered Ortlieb with eight shots in the second quarter, with the freshman coming up with six stops. He also had three saves in the fourth quarter.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

JOHN GLESENER, ARMY So., A, Camillus, N.Y.

Scored his second consecutive hat trick and finished with four points in the Black Knights' 10-6 loss to Lehigh Saturday.

MIKE HUFFNER, BUCKNELL Sr., D, Elmira, N.Y.

Logged six groundballs and three caused turnovers while spearheading Bucknell's defensive efforts during a 2-0 week.

PETER BAUM, COLGATE Sr., A, Portland, Ore.

Totaled nine goals and 11 points in two Colgate victories over Binghamton and Michigan. Scored six goals in a game for the fifth time in his career Tuesday against the Bearcats.

CONOR MURPHY, COLGATE Jr., GK, Wilmington, Mass.

Posted a .613 save percentage and moved to 3-1 on the season with two victories last week.

TERRY McKENNA, HOLY CROSS So., M, Summit, N.J.

Scored four times and had five points in the Crusaders' 7-5 win Sunday over Navy.

BRIAN HESS, LEHIGH Sr., M, Owings Mills, Md.

Netted his second career hat trick in Lehigh's 10-6 win at Army Saturday.

MATT POILLON, LEHIGH So., GK, Mount Sinai, N.Y.

Stellar in goal with 15 saves, just one shy of his career best, in Lehigh's 10-6 win at Army. Made 10 stops in the second half.
