WASHINGTON - An annual rite of summer in the District begins this weekend when Kenner League basketball action takes place at McDonough Arena on the campus of Georgetown University.
The Kenner League is among the top summer college basketball leagues in the country and is annually held at Georgetown, affording basketball fans a chance to see current, future and former competing head-to-head over the summer.
The schedule for the 2010 season is scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 3, with four games filling the slate. The first game, featuring The Tombs against A. Wash Associates/Madness, starts at 2 p.m. Other games will be played at 3:20 p.m. (DCX vs. Hoop Magic Warriors), 4:40 p.m. (Bulldogs vs. Clyde's) and 6 p.m. (Electro Lite vs. Premiere Athletics).
Georgetown players will be spread out among five teams.
The Tombs will include all four Georgetown incoming freshmen, Moses Abraham (Kano, Nigeria/Progressive Christian [Md.]), Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./QEA) Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass./St. Mark's) and Markel Starks (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Prep), as well as sophomore Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) and senior tri-captain Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha).
Senior forward Julian Vaughn (Vienna, Va./Oak Hill Academy) and sophomore guard Vee Sanford (Lexington, N.Y./Lexington Catholic) will play for Clyde's, while sophomore forward Jerrelle Benimon (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) will play for DCX and junior guard Jason Clark (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) will play for Team Takeover.
Senior tri-captain Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College H.S.) and junior center Henry Sims (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) will play for the D.C. Legends, a roster that includes former Georgetown standout Mark Tillmon, former Syracuse guard Sherman Douglas and former Virginia player Junior Burroughs.
Regular season games will be played every Friday thru Sunday at McDonough Arena and the schedule closes out on Sunday, Aug. 1.
Quarterfinal games will be played on Thursday, Aug. 5 and Friday, Aug. 6.
Semifinal games will be played at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7 and the championship game will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7
All parking for Kenner League games will be in the Southwest Garage off the
Canal Road entrance to the University.
