WASHINGTON, D.C. – In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX in 1972, Events DC and Nike have joined as sponsors of the Sankofa Project’s 4th annual National Title IX Holiday Invitational Conference & Classic presented by Events DC. This multi-day conference and high school girls’ basketball invitational is being held Dec. 26-29 in Washington, D.C.
“The D.C. area is a basketball hotbed, so it’s fitting to have some of the nation’s best girls’ basketball teams compete annually in our nation’s capital,” said Erik A. Moses, managing director of Events DC’s Sports and Entertainment Division. “This event celebrates the great strides made for girls and women in athletics, as well as the importance of protecting and expanding those gains for the benefit of all women.”
“The continued support of Events DC has enabled this event to make a national footprint raising awareness of the educational opportunities available to female scholar athletes because of the 1972 passage of Title IX and scholarship opportunities available thru the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA),” added Janice Dove Johnson, executive director of the Sankofa Project and visionary for the National Title IX Conference and Classic. “Having Nike join as a corporate sponsor this year has enabled us to expose many more D.C. area teams to information and opportunities they might not otherwise experience.”
The Conference, to be held Dec. 26-27 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, reflects on the impact of Title IX and the opportunities that presently exist because of its passage. Following the general session on Dec. 26, the annual banquet includes the presentation of the first Bob Headen Award, in honor of the former H.D. Woodson High School girls’ basketball coach in the DC Public School System, and a special celebration in honor of the 40th anniversary of Title IX.
On Dec. 27, Michael Bozeman, former head women’s basketball coach at George Washington University, will share recruiting tips with players, parents and coaches during the “Breakfast of Champions”. Morning and afternoon workshops will cover topics such as “Digital Do’s and Don’ts for the College Bound Athlete” and “Title IX Protections against Bullying / Harassment.
Following the Conference, 16 highly competitive girls’ basketball teams (with GPAs of 3.0 or better) will compete in a three-day invitational from Dec. 27-29 at the Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports. All events are open to the public. The schedule of events and tickets for the Conference and Classic are available at Tickets.SankofaProject.org.
