Freshman Standout Helped GW to 2-0 Weekend Over St. John's and Georgetown
April 9, 2013
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington freshman Danil Zelenkov was named Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Co-Rookie Performer of the Week honor after guiding the Colonials to a 2-0 weekend, the league announced on Tuesday.
Zelenkov went undefeated at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles to help No. 67 GW (12-5) push its winning streak to five, with a 5-2 victory over St. John's at home on Senior Day on Saturday and a 6-1 win at Georgetown on Sunday.
The weekly conference award marks the third straight for the Skopje, Macedonia product and fifth this season, marking the most weekly awards given to an A-10 men's tennis freshman in a season since 1999.
On Saturday against St. John's, Zelenkov downed the Red Storm's Mike Lampa, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 singles spot. He and No. 2 doubles partner, junior Nikita Fomin, led the St. John's tandem of Michael-John Every and Vasko Mladenov, 6-5, when the match was called after GW secured the doubles point at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. At Georgetown on Sunday, the freshman standout earned a 6-3, 6-4 singles victory over Reese Milner, and he and Fomin downed the Hoyas' duo of Shane Korber and Alex Tropiano, 8-5.

Three Tally Hat Tricks as Colonials Improve to 3-1 in A-10 Action
April 12, 2013
Box Score
WASHINGTON – Three different players recorded hat tricks as the George Washington lacrosse team rolled past St. Bonaventure, 19-7, at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Friday.
The Colonials improve to 8-5 overall and push their record to 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since the 2009 season. GW’s 19 tallies against SBU marked its highest goal output in a conference contest since 2010.
Sophomore Allie Rash paced all scorers with a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists, while senior Nicole Lacey and freshman Olivia Boudreau each netted three goals and dished out an assist. With 98 career goals, Lacey is just two shy of becoming the fifth-ever Colonials’ player to join the century club.
St. Bonaventure (5-8, 0-4 A-10) and GW exchanged goals over the opening 7:16 before the Colonials exploded for a 10-1 run. The Bonnies got on the scoreboard first at 2:46, but sophomore Jamie Bumgardner (1g, 2a) responded for the Colonials with an unassisted goal just over two minutes later.
SBU had a 2-1 lead at 6:50 when Lacey and Boudreau responded with back-to-back unassisted scores in a span of 65 seconds to spark a five-goal run. Boudreau found an open Terasa Vassallo to put GW up 4-2 and Rash found the back of the net 32 seconds later off of a pass from Bumgardner. Boudreau chipped in her second unassisted goal at 13:18 to put the Colonials up 6-2.
The Bonnies’ Jenna Schlagenhauf interrupted the Colonials’ run with a goal midway through at 14:59, but GW scored another five unanswered goals and SBU could not keep pace. Senior Caitlyn O’Brien netted the first goal of her career to put the Colonials up 11-3 with just under three minutes remaining in the first frame when she caused an SBU turnover, scooped up the ground ball and found her way around goalkeeper Karly Kocis. The Bonnies added two more goals in the final 1:56 to close to 12-5 at the break.
The Colonials tacked on eight goals in the second half, including a career-first from rookie Simone Haugen, while the Bonnies mustered just two. GW opened the frame with four scores - from junior Jordy Bathras, Rash, Mia and Lacey - over an 11:42 span. Bathras and Lacey both scored unassisted goals while Bumgardner assisted Rash’s tally, and Rash registered the helper to Mia.
SBU’s Marybeth Madia got past Colonials’ goalkeeper Jess Hicks to cut the lead to 15-6 at 15:33, but GW added three straight scores to push its advantage to 18-6 with less than six minutes remaining.
Hicks made six stops between the pipes in 48:34 of work and sophomore Mackenzie Jones made one save. The Colonials outshot the Bonnies, 37-15, and held a 16-12 advantage in draw controls. GW caused 14 of SBU’s 20 turnovers, with Lacey and sophomore Jenn Seitz combining for half with four and three caused turnovers, respectively.
GW welcomes Duquesne on Sunday, April 14 for its final home game of the regular season. Seniors Jess Hicks, Nicole Lacey, Caitlyn O’Brien and Soo Mee Yoon will be honored prior to Sunday’s contest.
