Division I PING All-Region TeamsWASHINGTON – George Washington men’s golf senior Andres Pumariega was named to the 2012 NCAA Division I PING All-Northeast Region Team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday. Pumariega is one of just 155 golfers to be honored by the GCAA across six regions – Northeast, East, Southeast,Midwest, Central and West.
The Miami, Fla., native is the first Colonials' player to earn the annual award since Brendan Barrack in 2009, and is one of three Atlantic 10 golfers honored along with fellow Northeast Region selection Branden Chicorka of Rhode Island and Midwest Region selection Sebastian MacLean of Xavier.
GW’s Team MVP the past two seasons, Pumariega earned a spot on the prestigious all-region team after a standout final season with the Colonials, highlighted by All-Conference status after leading the Colonials to their first-ever A-10 Championship in April.
Pumariega helped the sixth-seeded Colonials to the conference crown and a school-record 36-hole score of 8-under par 568 after he placed second in the field of 55 golfers. He fired a two-round total of 5-under par 139 to finish just one stroke behind individual champion Raoul Menard of Charlotte, while his second-round 5-under 67 was the lowest round of the Championship.
In addition to his success at the league championship, Pumariega was crowned co-champion of the Kiawah Classic with a season-best three-round score of 2-under par 214. Earlier this month, Pumariega and the Colonials competed in their first NCAA Regional Tournament since 2006 and first under fourth-year head coach Terry Shaffer (’79). Pumariega paced GW with a 54-hole total of 11-over 227 as the Colonials finished in a tie for 13th place.
An international business major, Pumariega was named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference Team, as well as the GW Athletics Department Academic Dean’s List this season.
