HAMPTON, Va. – Senior guard Christopher Tolson was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the second half, but his final four secured the Hampton University men’s basketball team’s 68-63 win over Morgan State Monday night at the HU Convocation Center.

Tolson (Laurel, Md.), who scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, was 3-for-6 from the floor in the final 20 minutes for the Pirates, while senior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) scored 15 points.

 Sophomore center David Bruce (Linden, N.J.) added 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

 Junior forward Wesley Dunning (Washington, D.C.) came up huge for Hampton on the boards, grabbing a game- and career-high 10 rebounds, while also dropping nine points with four assists and four steals.

 The game was a see-saw battle, with 12 ties and five lead changes; the largest lead for either team was six, which Morgan State held with 4:01 left in the first half, and the Pirates’ largest lead was five with 3:23 left in the second half.

 Hampton (8-14, 4-5 MEAC) got its final lead of the game after the Bears’ Aric Brooks went 3-for-3 at the free throw line at the 6:43 mark to tie the game up at 55-55, when Dunning made a layup with 5:20 left in the second half.

 From that point, the Pirates went on a 7-2 run to take a five-point lead over the Bears. Morgan State then cut that lead back to two off a basket by Larry Bastfield with 56 seconds left to play, but senior guard Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) came up big for the Pirates when he made a layup off the glass to make it a two-possession game at 64-60.

 Bastfield would hit another jumper for the Bears. Morgan State then fouled Tolson, who then sealed the deal with his final four points coming from the charity stripe.

 Hampton was 16-for-25 (64 percent) from the free throw line and shot 42 percent (25-for-59) from the floor. The Pirates also won the rebounding battle, claiming 46 rebounds to the Bears’ 39. The Pirates scored 34 points in the paint, 14 points of 14 Bears turnovers and 18 second-chance points.

 Morgan State (5-14, 3-5 MEAC) shot 30 percent (19-for-63) from the floor behind DeWayne Jackson, who scored a game-high 24 points for the Bears. Brooks added 18 points.
