ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy won the crucial doubles point by winning two-of-three doubles matches, then won all six singles matches in straight sets to defeat Saint Francis (Pa.), 7-0, at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex on Saturday. "I thought that St. Francis was a much-improved team from one year ago. They fought extremely hard today," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear, who is now 36-14 in dual meets in his third season at Navy. "We had a couple matches that we were in charge of early and they did a great job of fighting back and really tested our meddle. "I like the way we seem to be shaping up thus far this season. We have looked very sharp and concentrated in our practice sessions," added Puryear. "However, we do have areas that we must continue to improve upon. Our goal is to continue to improve with each match we play this year." Navy lost at No. 1 doubles, but breezed at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, allowing just one game won by St. Francis. Noelle Kaufmann and Erin Snook won at No. 2 doubles by an 8-1 margin and Darien Sears and Abby Shewalter were victorious at No. 3 doubles, 8-0. The Midshipmen then dominated singles play, allowing a total of 17 games won by the Red Flash. Playing No. 1 singles for the first time in her career, Darien Sears (Silver Spring, Md.) defeated Shivani Patel, 6-4, 6-0. Emani Decquir (Sacramento, Calif.), who has slid down to No. 2 singles this year, bested Lucy Jasso, 6-2, 6-3. The victory was Decquir's 35th of her career, an ongoing school record. Junior Stefanie Ton (Milpitas, Calif.) defeated Alex Sachs at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Ton was an all-Patriot League second-team honoree a year ago while playing at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.) dominated Nuria Valls at No. 4 singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Snook is now 15-7 all-time in dual meet action. A pair of freshman, Gabby Winter (Orlando, Fla.) and Abby Shewalter (Winchester, Mass.), were impressive in their first career dual-meet action. Winter, coming off a sensational fall season with a 10-6 record, defeated Devynn Sarver by a 6-1, 6-0 margin at No. 5 singles. Shewalter was equally as impressive at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Laura Husband. Navy will remain at home next weekend when it hosts Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 8:00 am and Delaware State on Sunday at noon. DOUBLES PLAY 1) Sachs / Jasso (SF) d.
