NORFOLK, Va. – Junior guard Pendarvis Williams was named the MEAC Player of the Year, while Norfolk State men’s basketball head coach Anthony Evans was tabbed the Coach of the Year as the all-conference teams and postseason awards were announced by the MEAC office on Sunday afternoon.

In addition to Williams earning a spot on the All-MEAC first team along with the player of the year award, senior forward Rob Johnson earned a spot on the All-MEAC third team, while freshman Rashid Gaston was tabbed to the All-Rookie Team.

Williams led the Spartans with 14.1 points per game and also added 4.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals in leading NSU to the MEAC regular season title at 16-0. He shot 46.7 percent from the floor, 40.7 percent from the 3-point line and 81.4 percent from the charity stripe.

Williams also averaged 14.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in conference games to give the Spartans back-to-back MEAC player of the year awards after Kyle O’Quinn won the honor last year. It also marks the fifth time ever NSU has had a player win the MEAC player of the year award.

A native of Philadelphia, Williams finished fifth in the conference in scoring as well as third in 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals per game (2.1) as well as fourth in free throw percentage.

Evans became the first Spartan coach to win the league’s top honor after leading NSU to a perfect record in conference play at 16-0. After losing four starters from last year’s MEAC tournament championship team that upset No. 2 seed Missouri in the NCAA tournament, the Spartans notched just the fourth-ever undefeated season in the history of the MEAC. Coppin State was the last school to accomplish the feat in 1993-94.

Evans has also led NSU to a current 15-game win streak heading into the team’s first game of the MEAC tournament on Wednesday, tied for the second-longest active win streak in the nation and the longest by an NSU team since 1989-90. The Spartans also finished the year with an 11-0 home record, the first time finishing an entire season undefeated at home since 1970-71.

NSU also won its first outright regular season conference title since capturing the CIAA Northern Division in 1987. The Spartans own a 21-10 overall record to give them their first back-to-back 20 win seasons since 1994-95 and 1995-96.

Johnson finished third on the team with 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while also contributing 1.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He was a two-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Week and finished the year shooting 37.2 percent from the floor and 67.0 percent from the charity stripe. The Roswell, Ga., native ranked 13th in the conference in defensive rebounds per game (4.1).

Gaston, a four-time MEAC Rookie of the Week this year, averaged 8.2 points and a team-leading 6.3 rebounds while shooting 57.0 percent from the floor. He became the fifth NSU player to earn a spot on the all-rookie team and the first since Williams did so after the 2010-11 season. Gaston, who hails from Warren, Ohio, was third in field goal percentage in the MEAC, fourth in offensive rebounds (2.8) and 12th in rebounding.

Voting was done by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors. This year also marked the first time the MEAC honored an all-conference third team in its postseason awards.

NSU will play at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the MEAC tournament at Scope Arena against the winner of the first-round game between Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman set to take place Tuesday afternoon.

NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman forward Rashid Gaston was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week for the second straight time on Monday afternoon as the conference office announced the men’s basketball weekly honors.

In NSU’s only game last week, Gaston came off the bench to score 10 points and tie his career high with 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. The Spartans needed every one of those points in a 62-61 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at Joseph Echols Hall…

NSU Moves to 14-0 After Surviving Scare from B-CU, 62-61 PDF Print E-mail

NORFOLK, Va. – Jamel Fuentes broke a 59-59 tie on a putback with 44.6 seconds left, and the Norfolk State men’s basketball team improved to 14-0 in the MEAC after surviving Bethune-Cookman’s upset bid in a 62-61 win over B-CU Saturday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

The pesky Wildcats led for most of the latter part of the second half and had the Spartans on the ropes. A back-and-forth game – 12 lead changes altogether in the second half – eventually led to a 55-53 NSU advantage with 2:59 to go after junior Malcolm Hawkins pulled up for a big 3-pointer from the right wing.

B-CU’s Kevin Dukes quickly quieted the roaring crowd with a trey of his own, but junior Brandon Goode came up big with a tip-in on NSU’s next possession with 2:19 left. Down 57-56, Bethune-Cookman (12-17, 7-7) got another big 3-pointer, this time from Paul Scotland, to put the Spartans in a precarious spot with less than two minutes left.

Freshman Rashid Gaston’s putback layup tied it up at 59-59 with a minute and a half left, and Fuentes grabbed an offensive rebound on the team’s next possession and drove straight to the hoop for two when the seas parted for B-CU on defense.

Adrien Coleman was unable to convert a layup with 21 seconds left but was successful on a second attempt with 8.4 on the clock after Hawkins had hit 1-of-2 from the foul line. Junior Pendarvis Williams missed both free throws with about six seconds left, but the Wildcats were unable to bring the ball up court and get a shot off before the clock expired.

NSU won its 13th in a row, extending its Division I record in the process, and improved to 19-10 overall. The Spartans need one more win over the last two regular season games to lock up the No. 1 seed in the MEAC tournament. The Spartans stayed a game ahead of North Carolina Central (13-1).

Williams was one of four players in double figures for NSU with 14 on 5-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from the 3-point line. Gaston came up big for NSU off the bench with a 10-point, 11-rebound effort.

Fuentes also had a big game with 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Hawkins added 13 points.

Scotland led B-CU with 16 points, with 12 in the second half alone, to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Dukes and Coleman each added 12.

Neither team shot particularly well, with NSU hitting 21-of-58 (36.2 percent) and B-CU connecting on 20-of-58 (34.5 percent). The Spartans also shot themselves in the foot by going 16-of-33 from the free throw line.

The Spartans jumped out to a 12-4 lead to start the game, but a quick 7-0 run by the Wildcats prevented NSU from extended its lead into double digits. The Spartans answered right back, holding Bethune-Cookman to just one basket over a six-minute period during a 12-3 run.

B-CU hit all four free throw attempts near the end of the half to cut the NSU lead to five, 27-22.

After two free throws from Fuentes gave the Spartans a nine-point advantage in the second half, the Wildcats used a 12-3 run over a four-and-a-half minute span to tie it up at 34-34. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way, with B-CU twice going up by a trey with less than nine minutes left.

Of NSU’s 14 conference wins this year, 12 have been by 10 points or less. The Spartans are 14-4 on the season in games decided by 10 or less.

NSU will face Florida A&M Monday at 8 p.m. at Echols Hall before finishing up with North Carolina A&T at home on Thursday. The Spartans are attempting to become the first MEAC school to go undefeated in conference play since Coppin State in 1993-94.
