Maryland guard Grievis Vasquez’s 27 points led a Terrapins offensive effort and combined with a disruptive defensive style that thwarted the California Bears shooters produced an 84-71 victory yesterday in Kansas City, Mo.

Tenth seeded Maryland (21-13) didn’t allow the nation’s top shooting team from 3 point range to get into a rhythm.   The Terps applied pressure that never allowed the Cal shooters to get into a flow.

Besides Vasquez, Maryland’s Dave Neal and Eric Hayes combined for 15 and 14 points respectively to help the Terps advance to the second round where they will meet No.2 seed Memphis this Saturday.

Vasquez finished 10-21 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds and dished out 4 assists.
