LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins selected cornerback Kevin Barnes with their third-round selection (No. 80 overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. The six-foot, 187-pound Barnes was known as one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s hardest hitters while playing his college football at the University of Maryland (2005-08). Since cracking the starting lineup as a junior, Barnes opened all 20 contests in which he played over the last two seasons and recorded 85 tackles, including 5.5 for loss, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and 14 passes defensed. The 22-year-old Barnes was born Sept. 15, 1986 and attended Old Mill High School in Glen Burnie , Md. OTHER NOTES ON BARNES SELECTION: Barnes is the sixth player the Redskins have drafted from Maryland and the first since selecting defensive tackle Delbert Cowsette in the seventh round in 2000. Other Terrapins drafted by Washington were TE Frank Wycheck (1993, sixth round), RB Rick Badanjek (1986, seventh round), WR Roland Merritt (1970, seventh round), and T Ralph Sonntag (1970, ninth round) This is the sixth consecutive draft the Redskins have selected a defensive back and the second straight they have chosen a cornerback (Justin Tryon, 2008 fourth round). By selecting Barnes with the 80th pick, it is the highest selection Washington has used on a cornerback since taking Carlos Rogers with the ninth overall pick in 2005. |
