Cavaliers nearly dig out of 9-1 hole before stranding winning run at first base in ninth inning
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The fourth-ranked Virginia baseball team nearly dug its way out of an early eight-run hole but fell a run short in a 9-8 loss to Radford Wednesday evening at Davenport Field. Virginia (30-4) saw its five-game win streak come to an end, while Radford (20-11) extended its streak to eight straight victories.
Down five runs entering the ninth inning, Virginia scored four times in its last at-bat and put the potential winning run on first base before coming up short. UVa gave up three first-inning runs and six more in the second in falling behind 9-1.
Virginia finished with eight hits, with Derek Fisher (So., Rexmont, Pa.) picking up two, including a massive home run which cleared the scoreboard in right-center field in the sixth inning. Jared King (R-Sr., Radford, Va.) added a pair of hits for the Cavaliers.
Making his first start since undergoing elbow surgery eight months ago, Artie Lewicki (Jr., Wyckoff, N.J.) pitched the first inning and took the loss. He gave up three runs (two earned) and a pair of hits while on a strict pitch count. Trey Oest (Fr., Dover, Fla.) relieved Lewicki in the second inning and was tagged for six earned runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Radford starter Dylan Nelson (4-2) earned the win after giving up four earned runs, four hits and three walks in six innings. Michael Costello left the potential winning run on base in the ninth inning to earn his seventh save.
Radford jumped out fast, scoring three times in the first against Lewicki. The first two batters reached base before Jeff Kemp hit a tailor-made double-play ball to shortstop Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.), who booted it for an error to load the bases. A Zach Woolcock groundout scored a run, and Alexander Lee followed with a two-run single to center.
UVa loaded the bases with none out in its half of the first and scored a run on a Brandon Downes (So., South Plainfield, N.J.) sacrifice fly.
Radford sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times in the second inning, marking the most runs allowed in an inning by Virginia this year. Oest relieved Lewicki and quickly got the first out before the next five batters reached base. Josh Reavis started the scoring with an RBI single and Kemp followed with a three-run bomb over the left-field bleachers to make it 7-1. Woolcock then singled and one out later Ryan Burgess singled. Oest was lifted for Josh Sborz (Fr., McLean, Va.), and Hunter Higgerson greeted him with a two-run double to left to push the lead to 9-1.
After allowing nine runs and eight hits over the first two innings, Virginia’s pitchers shut Radford down over the final seven frames, giving up just three hits and five baserunners. UVa slowly chipped away, getting a run in the fourth on a Mike Papi (So., Tunkhannock, Pa.) home run to right-center and two in the sixth on a blast to right-center by Fisher.
Trailing 9-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, UVa loaded the bases with none out against reliever Daniel Bridgeman. Costello entered and got a pair of the flyouts, with the second from Nate Irving (So., Yonkers, N.Y.) bringing home a run. Cogswell singled to again load the bases and King followed with an infield single to bring in a run. Joe McCarthy (Fr., Scranton, Pa.) singled up the middle to score a pair of runs and pull UVa to within 9-8, but Costello got Downes to pop out to end the threat and the game.

Cavaliers lose series opener for first time this season
ATLANTA, Ga. – The fourth-ranked Virginia baseball team lost the opening game of its ACC series at No. 17 Georgia Tech, 2-1, Friday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. The loss was the first for Virginia (30-5, 12-4 ACC) in its opening game of a conference series this season.
Georgia Tech starting pitcher Buck Farmer (7-1) went the distance in earning the complete-game win for the Yellow Jackets (25-9, 10-6). He allowed a run, 10 hits and a walk while striking out 10 in becoming the first pitcher to throw a complete game against UVa this season.
Virginia starter Brandon Waddell (Fr., Houston, Texas) worked 5 2/3 strong innings, giving up two earned runs, six hits and a walk while striking out three as he was saddled with his first loss and fell to 2-1. The Cavaliers’ bullpen again was solid, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the game tight.
Derek Fisher (So., Rexmont, Pa.), Nick Howard (So., Olney, Md.), Reed Gragnani (Sr., Richmond, Va.) and Joe McCarthy (Fr., Scranton, Pa.) each had a pair of hits for Virginia, which finished with 10 hits. Georgia Tech picked up seven hits.
Georgia Tech wasted no time in scoring the game’s first run as Kyle Wren led off and tripled to right-center field, and Sam Dove followed with a sacrifice fly to left.
Virginia manufactured a run in the third inning. Gragnani hit a leadoff double to right, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) groundout.
Both pitchers cruised until the bottom of the sixth inning when Wren laid down a bunt and reached with a single after a miscommunication between Waddell and catcher Nate Irving (So., Yonkers, N.Y.). Dove laid down a sacrifice bunt and after Brandon Thomas popped out, Zane Evans lined a single to center to score the run and give Georgia Tech a 2-1 edge.
Virginia nearly tied things in the next half inning, but after a Howard single to left field, Fisher was thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw from Wren. UVa also got a leadoff single in the ninth from McCarthy, but he was thrown out as part of a 3-6 double-play grounder from Mike Papi (So., Tunkhannock, Pa.). Fisher followed with a single, but pinch hitter Kenny Towns (So., Burke, Va.) grounded out to end the game.

Four Virginia pitchers combine to allow three baserunners in dominating effort
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Four Virginia pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as the fourth-ranked Cavaliers’ baseball team picked up a 2-0 road win over Liberty Tuesday evening in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,543 at the new Liberty Baseball Stadium. Virginia (26-3) recorded its NCAA-best seventh shutout of the season.
UVa pitchers allowed just three baserunners, with two coming on errors, and combined for 14 strikeouts and no walks. In his second career start, Josh Sborz (Fr., McLean, Va.) set career highs with four innings pitched as well as five strikeouts. Sborz (3-0) allowed just two baserunners, on a double and an error, as he picked up the win. Kyle Crockett (Jr., Poquoson, Va.) pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his third save.
Nathan Kirby (Fr., Midlothian, Va.) fanned a career-best six batters in 3 1/3 hitless innings of relief. Austin Young (Jr., Mechanicsville, Va.) picked up two quick outs to end the eighth inning to lower his ERA to 0.93 this year. The bullpen has allowed only one run over its last 40 1/3 innings of work.
Liberty starter Josh Richardson (1-2) worked four innings, giving up two earned runs, three hits and two walks while striking out four. Flames closer Ashton Perritt was brilliant in pitching five perfect innings to keep the game in reach for Liberty (17-12).
The teams combined for just four hits and there were only nine baserunners in the game – five coming in the Cavaliers’ half of the first inning. After UVa’s Kenny Towns (So., Burke, Va.) hit a leadoff single in the fourth inning, the final 18 Cavaliers were set down in order. Liberty’s Trey Wimmer had the lone hit for the Flames, a leadoff double in the second inning.
Virginia scored the game’s lone runs in the first inning while sending eight batters to the plate. Jared King (R-Sr., Radford, Va.) singled with one out and Joe McCarthy (Fr., Scranton, Pa.) drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and after Brandon Downes (So., South Plainfield, N.J.) struck out, Mike Papi (So., Tunkhannock, Pa.) was issued an intentional walk. Towns then was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Nick Howard (So., Olney, Md.) beat out an infield single to score McCarthy and push the lead to 2-0.
Liberty’s main scoring threat came in the second inning. Wimmer lined a double down the left-field line to lead off the inning. He moved to third on a flyout to right by Ryan Cordell, but was stranded there when Sborz struck out Danny Grauer and Dalton Britt to end the inning.
The Flames put Wimmer on second with one out in the seventh on a two-base throwing error by Kirby on a routine grounder back to the mound, but he bounced back by getting a pair of short fly outs to wrap up the inning.

Cavaliers rack up 13 hits while improving to 27-3 on the year
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The fourth-ranked Virginia baseball team recorded an 8-6 victory over VMI Wednesday evening at Davenport Field. Nick Howard (So., Olney, Md.) picked up three hits to highlight a 13-hit night for the Cavaliers (27-3).
Eight of the Cavaliers’ nine starters recorded hits. Brandon Downes (So., South Plainfield, N.J.), Joe McCarthy (Fr., Scranton, Pa.) and Kenny Towns (So., Burke, Va.) each registered a pair of hits. Downes had a pair of RBI and also scored twice.
Freshman Trey Oest (Dover, Fla.) started for UVa and worked 5 1/3 innings to earn the win and improve to 5-0. He gave up five earned runs, seven hits and a walk while fanning a career-high seven batters. Kyle Crockett (Jr., Poquoson, Va.) worked a dominating 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his fourth save.
Andrew Woods (2-1), the second of six VMI pitchers, took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) and four hits in two innings. Starter Lucas Cash gave up three first-inning runs before getting pulled after the first inning.
Three VMI errors proved to be critical, as each led to an unearned run. On the flip side, Virginia did not commit an error.
VMI (14-18) scored in each of the first three innings, starting with a two-out, first-inning rally as Rob Dickinson singled and Sheldon Shifflett followed with a run-scoring triple.
Virginia countered with three runs and four hits in its half of the first, topping its totals for runs and hits for the entire contest Tuesday night in a 2-0 win at Liberty (three hits). UVa loaded the bases with none out before Downes reached on a fielder’s choice to score a run. Mike Papi (So., Tunkhannock, Pa.) then hit a sacrifice fly, and Towns followed with an RBI single to center to give UVa a 3-1 edge.
VMI chipped away over the next two innings to tie the game, getting a sacrifice fly in the second from Thomas Stallings and a solo home run to lead off the third from Dickinson.
UVa scored three runs in its half of the third inning. McCarthy led off with a single and Downes followed with a ground-rule double to right-center field. Papi ripped a single to left to score McCarthy and give UVa the lead once again. Towns then hit a potential double-play grounder to shortstop, but Drew Bryan booted it for an error, while Downes scored on the play. Reed Gragnani (Sr., Richmond, Va.) later grounded into a double play, with Towns scoring. It marked the first of four double plays that Virginia hit into in four straight innings; UVa had hit into eight double plays in the first 29 games this year.
VMI stayed close with two runs in the sixth inning. Shifflett and Matt Winn hit back-to-back singles to start the frame, and Brandon Angus bunted them over. Whit Mayberry (R-Jr., Alexandria, Va.) entered the game and struck out Ray Lopez looking before giving up consecutive RBI singles to Thomas Stallings and Bryan, pulling the Keydets to within 6-5.
UVa put up a run in the bottom of the sixth while once again taking advantage of an error. After Nate Irving (So., Yonkers, N.Y.) drew a two-out walk, Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error by pitcher Taylor Edens. Jared King (R-Sr., Radford, Va.) then ripped a double to left to plate Irving.
VMI cut the lead to 7-6 in the eighth inning. After Winn started the inning with a double against Mayberry, UVa brought Austin Young (Jr., Mechanicsville, Va.) to the mound. Angus hit a fly ball to center to move the runner to third, and pinch hitter Red Dowdell launched a sacrifice fly to center to plate the run. The run was just the second allowed
The Cavaliers picked up an insurance run in its half of the eighth. Irving led off with a single and one out later King reached on a fielding error by first baseman Will Connerley, with Irving moving to third. With two outs Downes slapped a single to right to score Irving.
