CFB Annual Previews: The Sporting
News
June 5 – June
12, 2006
Each
summer, like the arrival of cicadas in August, periodicals like The Sporting
News, Athlon Sports, Phil Steele’s, and others try to make sense out of an
otherwise senseless endeavor – predicting what team will finish where, and
(believe it or not) why. Almost all of
these annuals claim they’re better than the rest. And why not?
They still sell out the stocks each summer. What’s a little friendly competition between
sports magazines?
I’m not
sure whether I’m alone on this, but I really don’t believe I buy these football
annuals for the sake of getting a better grasp on the upcoming college football
season. I enjoy the almost comical
differences in each annual.
The
discrepancies continue on and on each preseason. Some of the annuals get lucky (Phil Steele’s
PSU rank was the highest of all), some get unlucky (Athlon Sports’ was the
lowest). But one thing always remains
the same; anything can happen.

Most Boring Time of the Year – Until
Now!
May 22 – June
4, 2006
If you’re
like me, you can agree that the entire month of May is time to relax, do some
spring cleaning, prepare for that upcoming Memorial Day barbeque, and sit out
on the lawn chair drinking in the fact that there is absolutely NOTHING going
on in the world of college football.
Finally,
May is now over and we are all ready to explode like it’s the last day of
school. What do we get to quench our
thirst for football? We get inundated
with the perennial flood of “trust-us-we-know-what-will-happen-this-year”
magazines hitting the shelves this week. Yes, it’s the month of preseason college
football annuals, and no one is more excited than I am.

I have to start off by saying it is nice to know what being “healthy” feels like again after spending last week confined in bed with a 102-degree fever and the flu. Dining on nothing but Gatorade and chicken noodle soup is not what it is all cracked up to be. Now I have regained my full cognitive thought giving me the ability to author articles that feature not only my opinion, but statements I deem to be unequivocally correct. Since this is my first article and we are just beginning to get to know each other, I figured I would touch on the teams I grew up watching…lose.

After weeks of anticipation, Penn State has released prices for this year's student season tickets. Again, they've hit a new high with no ceiling in sight. It's a growing trend in sports, as the average fans have a tougher time supporting their teams from the stands with each passing season.
