Washington, D.C. – Sophomore forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored 14 points and freshman guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) added 15 points as 11 different players scored and No. 5 Georgetown opened up an 18-point halftime lead en route to an 87-55 win over Jacksonville in front of 8,216 fans at Verizon Center Sunday afternoon. The win was the 100th for Georgetown at Verizon Center since it became its home arena during the 1997-98 season. The Hoyas have an all-time record of 100-43 in the building.
The win is the seventh-straight for the Hoyas, who improve to 7-0 overall, while the Dolphins fall to 3-6 overall.
Leading by 18 points at halftime (39-21), Georgetown out-scored Jacksonville 16-5 over the first 6:11 of the second half, taking a 55-26 lead on a jumper from Freeman. Six different players scored for the Hoyas during the run, which was started on a layup from junior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]).
A pair of free throws from senior guard Tyler Crawford (Stuarts Draft, Va./Robert E. Lee) pushed the lead to 31 points, 57-26, with 13:41 to play. A convention three-point play from Freeman with 11:06 to play gave Georgetown its biggest lead at 37 points, 65-28. Jacksonville managed to cut the lead to below 30 points midway through the half, but the Hoya lead went back to 34 points, 87-53, when freshman Omar Wattad (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) hit a three-pointer with 29 seconds left in the game.
After a sluggish opening five minutes, Jacksonville took its only lead of the game, 5-4, on a layup by Ayron Hardy with 16:42 to play in the first half. The Hoyas would use a quick 8-0 run over a span of 2:55, taking the lead for good. Hibbert started things with a layup and that was followed by consecutive three-pointers from Freeman and junior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]).
Jacksonville pulled to within five points, 14-9, on a jumper from Marcus Allen, but the Hoyas used an 8-0 run and took a 22-9 lead on a layup from senior forward Patrick Ewing, Jr. (Marietta, Ga./National Christian Academy [Md.]). The Dolphins managed to cut the lead to nine points with 5:10 left in the first half on a jumper from Andre McMillan, but a three-pointer from Summers made it 33-18 and a layup from freshman guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John’s College High School) with 39 seconds to play made it 39-21 at the break.
Summers scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Wright added 14 points and five assists and Freeman scored a game-high 15 points and handed out four assists.
The Hoyas shot a season-high 58.9 percent from the floor (33-of-56), were 45.8 percent from three-point land (11-of-24) and 58.8 percent from the free throw line (10-of-17).
Georgetown will take six days off before returning to the floor on Saturday, hosting Radford in a non-league game at McDonough Arena. Tip-off for the game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
