Washington, D.C. – Georgetown University sophomore men’s basketball players Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in a vote of the conference coaches, released today by the BIG EAST Conference office.
With the increased membership of the BIG EAST to 16 teams, the all-league teams have been expanded. Eleven players made the All-BIG EAST First Team. On March 7, one of those players will be named BIG EAST Player of the Year when the league announces its individual award winners at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City at 5 p.m. EST. The Hoyas sophomore frontcourt tandem have helped guide the Hoyas to a 19-8 overall record, including a 10-6 mark during BIG EAST Conference play. Georgetown is the No. 5 seed in this week’s tournament and will play 12th-seeded Notre Dame (15-12, 6-10 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, March 8 at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be shown on ESPN and can be heard locally on SportsTalk 980 AM. Green has been one of the most versatile players in the league this season. He is second on the Hoyas in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game, and ranks tied for 16th in the BIG EAST with 6.3 rebounds per game, and 15th in the conference with a team-best 3.26 assists per game. Green, a forward who was voted one of the team’s co-captains this season, has connected on 47.0 percent of his field goals (117-of-249). The BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Year last season, Green has started every game since coming to the Hilltop and is averaging 12.4 points and 6.5 rebounds. He has scored 736 points in 59 career games. Hibbert, meanwhile, leads the team in scoring with 11.9 points per game, is tied for 16th in the BIG EAST with 6.3 rebounds per game and ranks tied for 11th in the league with 1.0 blocks per game. The 7-2 center has recorded six double-doubles this season, leading the team in scoring 10 times and in rebounding on nine occasions. Hibbert leads the team in field goal percentage as well, connecting on 59.9 percent of his shots from the field (121-of-202). His scoring average this year, has climbed nearly seven points – from 5.1 to 11.9, a 6.8 point-per game increase – a number that ranks 10th among all players in the BIG EAST in terms of scoring improvement. In two years at Georgetown, Hibbert is averaging 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds, while starting 44 of 59 games played. Georgetown men’s basketball players have earned 64 total BIG EAST team awards, including this year’s Second Team selections of Green and Hibbert. Since the league started, 33 different players have been honored. Georgetown has had 11 different players named to the First Team, 14 players to the Second Team, and 11 on the Third Team. Nine members have been selected to the All-Rookie Team overall since 1988, including last year’s Co-Rookie of the Year Green, while 10 players were named to the All-FreshmanTeam between 1980 and 1987.
