Former Dunbar Crimson Tide standouts Vontae Davis, Arrelious Benn, and Nate Bussey will be suited up when the Fighting Illini of Illinois take on the Trojans of Southern California in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2008.

In a conversation with Dunbar head coach Craig Jefferies, I asked for the players' thoughts on playing in the grandaddy of all bowls in front of a national television audience.

How do Arrelious, Vontae, and Nate feel about playing in the Rose Bowl?

"They're all excited but each had different goals for getting there.  All the guys including
Vontae for instance are looking for an opportunity to showcase their skills. They do realize they will be on a big stage representing themselves, their school, and DC.

Any other thoughts the players have about playing in front of such a big national TV audience on New Years Day?

"Arrelious has felt he hasn't had that breakout game this year.  He really wants to have a
big game.  For both Arrelious and Vontae, they want to validate their decision to play for Illinois. Some people second guessed their decision but for them this shows they indeed made a good decision.   Most of all, they want to carry the banner for DC football.  They really want to represent DC well."

Coach is there anything you wish for them in the Rose Bowl?

"I wish I could watch them practice.  I'm very excited about them moving on and going to college but this is special for me.  I also want them to be victorious."

Arrelious Benn was rated the #1 wide receiver in the country in 2006 and played wide
receiver as a true freshman for Illinois.  Benn played 12 games and rushed the ball for a total of 185 yards and a 13.2 average per carry.

Benn was tops in receiving with 49 catches for 596 and 1 touchdown.  Benn also returned
a 90 yard kickoff for a touchdown.

Vontae Davis, a  sophomore who started as a true freshman at cornerback, recorded a total of 63 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 11 pass breakups.

Nate Bussey, a true freshman, played mostly on special teams and recorded 9 tackles.

For the Rose Bowl, conservative estimates are at least 10 million homes.  Gametime is scheduled for 4:30 pm est on ABC.

Look for a writeup on HD Woodson alum Eddie McGee, a local quarterback sensation as he makes his appearance with the fabulous crimson tide triple threat in the big New Year's Day game.
