Piscataway
, N.J.  –  Seventh-ranked Georgetown hit 11 three-pointers and used a 14-5 run to star the second half as four players scored in double figures, leading the Hoyas to a 58-46 win over Rutgers in front of 7,938 fans at the Louis Brown Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

It was the third-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers falls to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Leading by seven points (27-20) at the break, the Hoyas used a 14-5 run over the first 4:51 of the second half and took their biggest lead to that point, 41-25, on a three-pointer from forward Patrick Ewing, Jr. (Marietta, Ga./National Christian Academy [Md.]).

Freshman guard Austin Freeman (Mitchelville, Md./DeMatha) started the second half with a drive and followed that with a three-pointer, giving the Hoyas a 32-22 lead. A three from Rutgers’ Anthony Farmer made it 32-25, but Georgetown scored the next nine points, a drive from junior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.]), a free throw from senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep), a three-pointer from Sapp and Ewing’s shot from long distance.

RU would score the next five points to pull within 41-30, but Georgetown responded with back-to-back three-pointers, first from Wallace and then from sophomore forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), as the lead grew to 17 points, 47-30.  Rutgers pulled to within 11 on two occasions in the closing minutes, but Hibbert hit a free throw and sophomore Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) hit one apiece on two trips to maintain the lead.

It was a closely-contested first half with two ties and eight lead changes as the teams battled back and forth over the first 20 minutes of play.  A Hibbert layup gave Georgetown a 5-2 lead, but three-straight Rutgers baskets, two from Earl Pettis, gave the Scarlet Knights an 8-5 lead.  After Wallace tied the game at 8-all, J.R. Inman hit a put-back dunk to give RU a 13-8 lead with 12:15 to play.

A three from Ewing and a hook shot on the baseline from Hibbert tied the game at 13-all.  The lead changed hands five times over the next three minutes.

A dunk from Hamady Ndiaye gave Rutgers an 18-17 lead, but the Hoyas used a 7-0 run over a span of 1:09, taking a 24-18 lead on a layup from Freeman.  The run was started by a drive from Wallace and followed by a three from Freeman.  The Hoyas had the ball with 32 seconds left in the half and Rutgers stopped the clock four times with fouls, bringing it down to 9.3 seconds left.  Sapp found Wallace on the left side of the key for a three at the buzzer, giving Georgetown a 27-20 lead at the break.

Freeman scored 13 points, grabbed three rebounds, had two assists and two steals to lead the Hoyas, while Wallace added 11 points and two boards.  Sapp scored 10 points and had a team-high five rebounds while Summers added 10 points and four boards.

The Hoyas shot 47.6 percent from the floor (20-of-42), hit 47.8 percent of their three-pointers (11-of-23) and were 53.8 percent from the line (7-of-13).  The team was outrebounded 43-26, had 10 assists and 13 turnovers, while forcing RU to shoot 31.1 from the field.

Georgetown hits the road again once the weekend is done, traveling to Chicago to play at DePaul on Tuesday night.  The game tips off at 9 p.m. (ET), can be seen on ESPNU and heard locally on AM 570.
