Employing an aggressive defensive effort on All-American Tyler Hansbrough and the leadership of point guard Greveis Vasquez, the Maryland Terrapins took down the #1 North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. Maryland's Bambale Osby sealed the win with a layup with 21 seconds left on the clock on an assist from James Gist.
James Gist of Maryland led the Terrapins in scoring with 22 points and 13 rebounds as Maryland opened up an 11 point lead before the Tar Heels made a run. Vasquez played a stellar game at the point and finished with 12 points and 11 assists.
North Carolina, coming off two straight close calls against Clemson and Georgia Tech couldn't get their shots to fall in the closing seconds. Hansbrough missed a last second three point attempt to seal the win for the Terps.
Hansbrough led North Carolina with 17 points and 14 rebounds but the team as a whole shot only 38 percent from the field with 7-23 from 3 point range. Hansbrough himself shot just 6-15 from the field.
The Terps matched the Tar Heels bucket for bucket until the waning moments when Gist's assist to Osby helped Maryland win the game.
After the game Vasquez said "I'm happy for my team and Maryland basketball. I just want to let my teammates know I care about them. I'm with them."
The Maryland Terrapins are 12-7 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
