Washington, D.C. – The ninth-ranked Georgetown University men’s basketball team plays the first of two road BIG EAST match-ups on Saturday, visiting West Virginia . Georgetown will travel to New York on Wednesday to take on St. John’s . The Hoyas and Mountaineers will tip off at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The game can be heard locally on SportsTalk 980 AM, with Rich Chvotkin calling the action, and can be seen on MASN, with Dave Pasch and Len Elmore providing the play-by-play and analysis.
Georgetown won its second-straight game on Monday, defeating Syracuse in overtime in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,035 at Verizon Center, 64-62, as senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) hit an open 13-footer with less than a minute left in overtime. The Hoyas, who are ranked No. 9 in both the Associated Press Top-25 poll and in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ poll, improved to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in league play with their overtime win.
The Blue and Gray are the only team with one loss in conference play. A win on Saturday would keep the Hoyas at the top of the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas are ranked No. 1 in field goal percentage defense (35.6%), third in the country in field goal percentage (51.2%), and eighth in the country in scoring defense (57.3 ppg) in the latest statistical rankings from the NCAA. The Hoyas lead the BIG EAST in four different statistical categories: scoring defense, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense (29.6%).
Hibbert leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.2 points 6.6 boards per game. The 7-2, 275-pound center, who has two 20-plus point games this season, led the Hoyas with 15 points and 9 rebounds against Syracuse . Hibbert was recently named to the Naismith Trophy’s Mid-Season Top-30 List.
Sophomore forward DaJuan Summers ( Baltimore , Md. /McDonogh) is second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg) and has scored in double figures in seven of the last 10 games. Senior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman), who will start his 120th-straight game Saturday, is third on the team in scoring with 10.5 points per game, while adding 2.4 assists per game. Wallace scored 15 points against Syracuse , tying a season-high with four three-point field goals and dishing out four assists in the overtime thriller.
Freshman Austin Freeman (Mitchelville, Md./DeMatha) has reached double figures in scoring in seven of the last 10 games. Since breaking into the starting line-up against Fordham, Freeman has averaged 11.7 points and 2.6 rebounds. Junior guard Jessie Sapp ( New York , N.Y./National Christian Academy [ Md. ]) is fifth on the team in scoring (9.3 ppg), leads the team in assists (3.7 apg), and is third in rebounding (4.4 rpg). Against Syracuse , Sapp led the team with 39 minutes, scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had five assists.
Saturday’s game against West Virginia is the 45th all-time meeting between the Hoyas and the Mountaineers. Georgetown leads the head-to-head series, 24-20, but has not won at West Virginia since 2003. Hibbert’s 20 points and six rebounds along with Jeff Green’s 15 points led the Hoyas to a 71-53 victory last year against West Virginia at the Verizon Center .
