Defensive tackle Chris Baker, linebacker Navorro Bowman, and defensive back Knowledge Timmons were excused from the Penn State football team Jan. 25 due to pending legal issues, and their status with the team remains unclear.
Bowman, a redshirt freshman from District Heights, Md., and Baker, a sophomore from Windsor, Conn., were charged with felony aggravated assault and two misdemeanors, simple assault and disorderly conduct, in connection with an on-campus fight in October that left a victim “bloodied and beaten.”Timmons, a sophomore from York, Pa., was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and criminal trespass for his actions after the police arrived at the scene. Although the players will remain in school, their future with the team is uncertain, according to team sources. None of the players traveled with the team for the Nov. 17 season finale against Michigan State and they were also left off of the Dec. 29 Alamo Bowl roster. Baker started five games this season for the Nittany Lions, Bowman was a backup, and Timmons played special teams. All would have had a chance to compete for a starting job next season.Trouble with the law is nothing new for Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions this year. Six players, including Baker and junior standout Justin King, were charged in connection with an off-campus fight in April, and running back Austin Scott is awaiting trial after being charged with rape in October.
