Duke super forward Kyle Singler was the money man as he led his team to victory over the Terps in Durham, NC. Singler scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds followed by Greg Paulus who poured in 20.
The second ranked Duke Blue Devils (22-1,10-0 ACC) extended their winning streak to 12 games. Duke's DeMarcus Nelson finished with 12 points on 4-12 shooting and Jon Scheyer scored 13 to match his seven rebounds.
Greveis Vasquez led all Maryland scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds. Maryland (16-9, 6-4 ACC) had their four game winning streak snapped. Bambale Osby finished added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Coach Williams praised the team's mental toughness and stated the team would fight on. Williams was of course referring to his team's run to close Duke's lead in the second half to within two 55-57at the 7:50 mark.
The story of the second half however was the big playmaking ability of the Duke forward Kyle Singler down the stretch to help break Maryland's momentum. Singler hit a three pointer with 5:17 left on the clock after Vasquez scored on a runner. Singler put in another basket followed by a Jon Scheyer layup and the game was 68-57.
Duke held on down the stretch to close the game out. Despite shooting 39 percent from the field Duke finished the game 19 of 25 at the free throw line. Maryland finished just 8 of 12 at the free throw line with no scorers in double figures besides Vasquez and Osby.
This was the second victory for Duke over Maryland this year.
