Baltimore, MD—February 25---Rashida Suber scored a team-high 19 points to lead five players in double figures as Coppin State University won easily, 101-57 over Howard University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s game at the Coppin State. The Lady Eagles have won six in a row while the Lady Bison dropped their third straight and 10 out of their last 11.
Coppin State (17-11 overall,, 11-3 in the MEAC) established its dominance early, bolting out to a 44-17 halftime lead and never looking back. The Lady Eagles used a stifling defense that held Howard (3-23 overall, 2-11 in the MEAC) to 24 percent shooting (7 of 29) in the first 20 minutes.
Coppin State’s defense enabled it to shoot a blistering 66 percent from the field, with many baskets coming on fast break layup following Howard turnovers.
Suber made sure that the visitors would not get close as she scored 11 of her points in the first six minutes of the second half.
The Lady Bison were able to make a better showing in the second half as junior forward Tamaya Daniels tallied 14 of her game-high 22 points after intermission. Howard scored 40 points in the second half.
Lonice Kenley came off the bench to score 11 points and Zykia Brown added 8 in 20 minutes in a reserve capacity.
Danielle Anders added 15 for the Lady Eagles, Shalamar Oakley had 14 and reserves Chanelle Downing and Arielle Townes contributed 11 each.
GAME NOTES: Howard was out-rebounded 53-26 and lost the points-in-the-paint battle, 50-14….Shannon Carlisle scored 7 points, dealt out 5 assists and added 2 more steals to her school career record.
NEXT UP: Howard will host first place North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 2 pm while the Lady Eagles will try to solidy their second place standing when they travel to Princess Anne, MD to take on the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday at 2 pm.
