ATLANTA – Virginia sophomore Monica Wright has been selected as a finalist for the 2008 State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Wednesday. She was one of seven players named to the Region 2 All-America Team.
The State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team selection committee will review the 52 candidates and cut the list to 40 finalists on Thursday, March 20. The 40 finalists will all be in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team.
Wright leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per game. The second team All-ACC selection has led the Cavaliers back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005 and was also named to the ACC’s all-defensive team following the regular season.
At the ACC Tournament, Wright was outstanding, averaging 24.0 points per game en route to all-tournament team honors. Virginia boasts a 23-9 overall record and is ranked No. 24/23 in the national polls.
The Cavaliers head to Norfolk, Va., as a No. 4 seed and will face UC Santa Barbara Sunday, March 23, at approximately 9:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
