After the loss to the Kansas Jayhawks, a dejected Tyler Hansbrough answered questions from reporters on the game and his future. "Right now I don't know about that. It's just too early for me to say right now. I haven't even thought about that yet."
Hansbrough spoke mostly about the game and how the Jayhawks managed to control the outcome from beginning to the end. "It was their day today. They executed and we didn't."
For the first time this year, Hansbrough and the entire Tar Heels team met a quicker team that handled them at all positions, especially in the paint. Kansas jumped out to a 40-12 lead before exhaustion set in allow Carolina to make a 28-6 run to close the lead to within 5 points with five minutes left in the game.
On sheer will and tenacity, a trait that should earn Hansbrough player of the year honors, he managed 17 points and 9 rebounds. The Jayhawk front line of Darrell Arthur, Darnell Jackson, & Cole Aldrich kept Hansbrough in check most of the game.
Will Hansbrough turn pro? Visibly upset by the loss, one could walk away with the notion that he's a tremendous competitor and loves college. Many fans of the game and insiders have their opinion on whether Hansbrough is ready for the NBA.
Hansbrough gets many off balance shots down low around the basket and demonstrated an ability to hit jumpers from the outside but is he ready for Ben Wallace, Tim Duncan, or Kevin Garnett?
Hansbrough has demonstrated he's better than most of the college competition so the only thing left for him to prove is bring home a national title to Chapel Hill just because he has yet to accomplished that goal.
The key is going to come down to what situation he can land in. This is so critical for so many young players. If he can team up with a good playmaker a la Chris Paul, Darren Williams, or Jason Kidd, it will be good transition into the next level. More than likely his responsibilities will be rebounding, but I think it's safe to predict Hansbrough will have a ten year career because of his work ethic, intensity, intelligence and his talent.
Tyler Hansbrough has definitely been good for the college game and he is ready for the next level. He may even surprise the masses of NBA fans because he's smart enough to adjust his game and has more talent than many give him credit for. While he's not physically gifted with speed, and explosiveness, he has a high basketball IQ that could make a difference in Cleveland, Chicago, Philadelphia, and even Washington.
While I believe Tywon Lawson could benefit from one more year to work on his outside shot,Hansbrough has nothing to prove in the college game. If he does return, it wouldn't surprise me because his team would have to be the odds on pre-season favorite to win it all.
