WASHINGTON, D.C. – Daniel Kinney, Landria Buckley and Stephen Small-Warner will represent Howard at the NCAA Outdoor Regional this weekend. On the line are berths to the NCAA National Championships, to be held June 11-14 at Des Moines, Iowa. The top five individuals and top three relay teams earn automatic bids to Nationals.
"We're excited about going down to Florida this weekend," said head coach Michael Merritt. "To make it this far and be ranked in the national top 35 with more than 15,000 collegiate athletes who compete in track & field each year is very exciting. It's a great testament to them and their hard work."
Kinney hit the qualifying mark of 52.51 in the 400m hurdles two times over the course of the outdoor season. He first hit the qualifying time at NC State's Raleigh Relays on March 28-29, finishing ninth in the event. Kinney hit the mark once again at the Outdoor MEAC Championships, finishing third in 51.68.
The junior has also qualified for the 110m hurdles after crossing the line in 14.17 at the conference championship. That mark puts him 31st in the region. Buckley has been a standout all season long and will be competing in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles at this weekend's competition. The sophomore hit the qualifying mark of 13.6 in the 100m hurdles at Raleigh Relays on March 28th, putting her 17th in the region. The Michigan native originally qualified for the 400m hurdles at the Raleigh Relays after crossing the line in 59.24. She later improved on her time at the MEAC Championship after winning the event in 58.63, a mark that ranks her ninth in the region.
Small-Warner, a rookie on the Bison squad, qualified for this year's East Regional earlier this month at the MEAC Championships on May 3. Small-Warner's leap of 7.4 meters (24'3") in the long jump earned him a fifth-place finish in that event.
