Schwimer named pitcher of year; Miclat, Packer also named to first team
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four Virginia baseball players have been selected to the 2008 Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Team. Highlighting the UVa selections is Michael Schwimer (Sr., Alexandria, Va.), who was named the state’s Pitcher of the Year.
Schwimer was joined on the first team by shortstop Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and relief pitcher Matt Packer (So., Germantown, Tenn.). Starting pitcher Pat McAnaney (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.) was a second-team selection.
Schwimer becomes the third straight Virginia player to earn VaSID Pitcher of the Year honors, and UVa has won all three of the awards since it was instituted in 2006. Sean Doolittle (2006) and Jacob Thompson (2007) also took home VaSID Pitcher of the Year awards.
Schwimer, also a third-team NCBWA All-American, went 3-1 with a 1.72 earned run average this year and had an ACC-high 14 saves. His saves total led the ACC and tied the single-season school record, set by Casey Lambert in 2005. In 31.1 innings and 26 games, he allowed six earned runs, 19 hits and 10 walks while striking out 36. Schwimer currently ranks sixth nationally in saves this season. Following the season, he was drafted in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Miclat was one of two repeat first-team selections from 2007, joining George Mason’s Scott Krieger. Also a first-team All-ACC pick this season, he hit .320 this season and led the ACC with 30 stolen bases. With 83 career stolen bases, Miclat is tied for the Virginia career steals record and ranks 19th in ACC history. He was the only Virginia player to start and play in all 62 games this season and reached base safely in 58. After the season, Miclat was drafted in the fifth round of the MLB Draft by Baltimore.
Packer leads the nation in earned run average this season at 1.14. In 71.1 innings, he went 6-3 and allowed 12 runs (nine earned), 51 hits and 15 walks while striking out 58. Opponents hit just .202 against him, the lowest ERA in the ACC.
McAnaney went 4-6 with a 3.89 ERA in 2008. Also a second-team All-ACC selection, he tied for first in the league in complete games (three) and ranked seventh in strikeouts (93) and opponent batting average (.239) and 10th in ERA. McAnaney also was a first-team VaSID selection in 2005. He was drafted in the eighth round of the MLB Draft by Arizona following the season.
