Cavaliers host pair of meets on Panorama Farms

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia head coach Jason Dunn has released the schedule for the 2008 men’s and women’s cross country team. The season features the 2007 ACC Men’s Cross Country Champions and a pair of home events, including the season-opening Lou Onesty Invitational and the Cavalier Open, the final event before the NCAA Regional Championships.

Virginia will open the season Sept. 6 at home, hosting the annual Lou Onesty Invitational at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, before splitting for competition on Sept. 27. In last season’s Lou Onesty Invitational, former Cavalier All-American Emily Harrison and Andy Biladeau each took first in the race to pace Virginia, while Lauretta Dezubay and Stephanie Garcia joined Harrison in the top-five, finishing third and fourth, respectively, to help lead the women’s squad to the team title.

Following the home meet, the Cavaliers will head to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational, while others will compete in Williamsburg, Va., at the William & Mary Interregional. Both competitions are set to take place on Sept. 27.

A portion of the squad will again compete in Williamsburg on Oct. 18 at the Tribe Open, while others will travel to the Pre-NCAA Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., in preparation for the ACC Championships, which are set for Nov. 1 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The men’s squad won the ACC Championships last season, finishing 2-3-4-6, behind Biladeau’s runner-up finish. Ryan Foster crossed in third, while ACC Freshman of the Year Emil Heineking finished fourth. Jan Foerster wrapped up the sixth place finish to help the Cavaliers upset No. 7 N.C. State for the title.

The Cavaliers will close out the regular season hosting the Cavalier Open on Nov. 7, in Charlottesville. The runners will begin their postseason at the NCAA Regional Championships on Nov. 15 in Louisville, Ky. Last season, the men placed fourth and qualified for the NCAA Championships, where they finished 12th nationally. The women finished sixth at regionals and barely missed a berth to the national meet.

The 2008 NCAA Championships will be held on Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind.
