The Washington Nationals today placed infielder Aaron Boone on the 15-Day Disabled List (retroactive to July 7) with a left calf strain, and recalled infielder Pete Orr from Triple-A Columbus. Nationals Senior Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made this announcement.

Orr batted .275 (78-for-284) with 16 doubles, two home runs and 33 RBI in 73 games with Columbus . He paces the International League with 11 triples, and is the Clippers’ leader for runs (46), hits (78, tied) and stolen bases (19). Orr went 2-for-11 (.182) in seven games with the Nationals from June 21-30, appearing defensively at second base, third base and shortstop.

The 29 year-old has appeared in 278 major league games over four seasons, including the previous three with the Atlanta Braves, hitting .261 (99-for-380) with 12 doubles, five triples, two home runs and 18 RBI. He was signed by the Nationals as a minor-league free agent on December 15, 2007.

Boone, 35, suffered the injury while pinch running in Saturday’s game at Cincinnati . He has batted .258 with nine doubles, one triple, five home runs and 17 RBI in 71 games this season.
