Hultzen, Proscia earn spots on elite team
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Incoming Virginia freshmen Danny Hultzen and Steven Proscia have been named to Baseball America’s 2008 High School All-America Team, as announced Thursday by the publication. Hultzen was a first-team selection, while Proscia nabbed second-team honors.
Hultzen, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound left-handed pitcher from St. Albans High School in Washington, D.C., was one of four players to earn first-team honors at pitcher. The southpaw had a dominating senior campaign, going 13-0 with a 0.74 ERA. He averaged nearly two strikeouts per inning, as he posted 140 strikeouts in 73 innings.
Proscia, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound infielder from Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J., was a second-team infield selection. He hit .545 (55-for-101) with nine home runs and 45 runs batted in this season. Proscia also scored 56 runs, hit 12 doubles and three triples and stole 17 bases.
Hultzen was a 10th-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, while Proscia was a 39th-round selection of the Minnesota Twins.
Hultzen and Proscia are part of a prestigious group of players on Baseball America’s squad. Eighteen of the 27 players on the team were drafted in the first or second round of the MLB Draft in June.
