SE Washington, DC - It was a great week of basketball in the gates this week with the weather absolutely perfect. The 3rd Eye Mob, undefeated coming into this game, were without the services of 2007 Goodman League MVP Terence Whiters and Andray Blatche. The questions concerning how well 3rd Eye would perform in the face of adversity would become clear.
Before the game 3rd Eye co-CEO Rasheed "Sheed Dollar" Allen said, "We're a little short handed tonight but we should be straight."
Before the headliner game, the Black Tie Mob took on the George's All Stars and "The Project", the top defensive player in the Goodman League this summer.
The Project would put his stamp on this game early as he rejected three shots in the first three minutes. The scoring was pedestrian in the first half as the score was only 8-6 with 11 minutes left in the first half.
Ryan Hughes with the Black Tie Mob played a fantasic game and was the leading scorer for his team in the first half but George's All Stars led only 16-15 at halftime.
Ryan threw down a emphatic one handed dunk early in the second half but George's All Stars began to seize control led by "The Predator" on the wing and "The Project" down low, who racked up 8 blocks in the game. George's All Stars took the game 39-33.
In the headliner game, 3rd Eye, the 2007 Goodman League champion, would have to keep their undefeated streak alive with their star point guard and big man. Of course having super smooth scorer Eddie Basden and power forward Young Zo isn't exactly a "dropoff" in talent. Of course Terence Whiters is the key that turns the ignition for 3rd Eye. His speed and aggressiveness opens up opportunities for his teammates.
The Bump N Run team was led by Lou Wright (Gwynn Park/USC/Voorhees). Lou is a quality guard with a great feel for the game. His teammates L-Boogie, Chris, & Chucky Booker would prove to be worthy opponents and ultimately break the will of the 3rd Eye team.
3rd Eye's Tony Durant and Eddie Basden both hit jumpers early in the game while Lou with Bump N Run scored after a steal. Both teams battled and converted high percentages from the field until the 7:00 minute mark of the first half.
Bump N Run began to find their rthymn and with Lou's jumper at the 6:23 mark of the first half, opened up a five point lead on 3rd Eye. Bump N Run started playing very aggressively on defense. Johan hit a 3 pointer to open up a 33-23 lead with 4:01 left in the first half.
Eddie B and Young Zo from 3rd Eye battled back but couldn't stop Bump N Run on the defensive end. The halftime score was 40-33.
In the second half it was all Bump N Run. Chucky Booker's spin move at the 18:01 mark in the second half opened up a 46-35 lead for Bump N Run. The will of the 3rd Eye team was broke as Lou, L-Boogie, Chuck B, Johan & Chris opened up the lead to 18 points before the game was called at the 10:33 mark of the second half.
Sheed Dollar, co CEO of the 3rd Eye organization said after the game, "We died, they died."
Lou Wright from Bump N Run said, "They were a watered down team today. It would have been more competitive if everyone was here."
Eddie Basden of 3rd Eye said, "This is what makes us tough, playing thru adversity. This is what the Goodman League is all about."
