Wilmington, NC Incoming Virginia freshman golfer Ben Kohles (Cary, N.C) won the Carolinas Amateur Championship Sunday by defeating Kyle Wilson, 3 and 2 at Cape Fear Country Club.
Kohles overcame an early deficit to take the title. Wilson took an early 2-up lead before Kohles evened the match at the turn. Kohles dominated the back nine with wins on 10, 12 and 14 before closing the match with halved pars on 16.
Wilson will be a freshman at Western Carolina this fall.
The semifinals were contested in the morning as Kohles handily defeated Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. 4 and 3.
Due to thunderstorm delays earlier in the week, the tournament¹s final match was reduced from 36 to 18 holes in order to accommodate a Sunday finish.
Kohles was sixth after the opening stroke play (36 holes) portion of the tournament. He had rounds of 67 and 73.
The Carolinas Amateur was first played in 1910 and is one of the oldest amateur championships in the country. Cape Fear Country Club is one of five charter members of the Carolinas Golf Association.
