Washington DC - A small but enthusiastic group of fans turned out for the 9:30 game on a beautiful Friday night on the campus of Georgetown University to catch a glimpse of the Tombs/Heart and Soul game and get a sneak peek at the future of the Hoyas.
The Tombs comprise of a mix of incoming Georgetown freshmen power forwards Greg Monroe (Harvey, La/Cox High), Henry Sims (Baltimore, Md/Mount St. Joseph), guards Jason Clark (Arlington, Va/O'Connell High), and rising sophomore Chris Wright (St Johns High). The patient crowd was not disappointed.
Early signs are good. Many eyes in the building were on the Tombs big men but it was the guards who stole the show and gave Hoya fans reason to look forward to next season.
Greg Monroe has dominated the prep rankings over the last year or so but slipped this past spring due in part to some subpar performances on the high school all star circuit. Until he is matched up with quality opponents it's still a little too early to determine how Monroe's game will develop. He and Sims both demonstrated the ability to run the floor and finish well in the open court, especially when playing with a skilled point guard such a Chris Wright.
Guards Jason Clark and Chris Wright dominated play Friday night and led the Tombs to an easy 81-40 victory over an overmatched Heart and Soul team. Clark, a heady point guard with excellent ball handling skills, was exceptionally quick and displayed the all around tools to be productive in Thompson's Princeton offense or an uptempo style. He was able to flourish both ways. Above all else, if you get a chance to see him this summer, it's his natural "feel" for the game that's most impressive. He anticipates situations on the court, has quick hands on defense and never plays out of control while picking his spots to take over the game. Clark was really impressive in the second half on his way to 27 points. He loves to create off the dribble and drive the heart of the defense like Wright and finish at the rim.
Chris Wright, known for his ability to score the basketball, was equally impressive distributing the ball with surgical precision to Monroe, Sims, & Clark for easy buckets while converting 3 point and mid range shots from the field. Wright displayed great lift on his shots. The Hoyas will be loaded at the guard position next year.
The Hoyas have the athletes to run and gun if Thompson wants to develop that style of offense while his big men develop physically.
This weekend is the last week of the regular season before the playoffs begin the week of August 7th.
