SE Washington, DC - "Sweatsuit" Bill Burnett (Coolidge/San Jacinto JC/Southern University) manufactures three point shots as efficiently as the Toyota Motor Corporation manufactures Camrys. With Sweatsuit Bill it's no wasted motion or energy, it's catch, shoot, swoosh.
The the most prolific three point scorer in Goodman League history gets his points over the course of the game. He enters the body of the opposing team like a deadly virus and slowly but surely the opponent gets the normal symptoms like falling behind by double digits until suddenly they die because the commish Miles Rawls has to take them off life support.
There's no cure for the Sweatsuit Bill virus as of yet.
Such was the case on "Take me back Tuesdays" in the gates of the Barry Farms Coliseum.Sounds of Parliament Funkadelic, Jimmy Walker and the All Stars, & Teddy Pendergrass sent shockwaves of listening pleasure thru the ears of the Goodman faithful on a nice breezy evening. For the over 30 crowd who wants to enjoy great athletic competition and old school sounds, Tuesdays are for you.
Sweatsuit Bill has skill but he had a little help from his friend and teammate Kevin Durant. My only gripe on this game was Miles called the action before Bill could get his three point record back in the books that Durant broke a little over 1 week ago. Bill sunk 5 three pointers but had at least 3 or 4 left in him. Miles you should've given this man a chance to get his record back.
Kevin Durant was on the premises and the star of the show but Bill was the man tonight. Yes Durant was the high point man for the Sweat Mob with 27 points and provided all the sportscenter highlights which I will list after the writeup. Durant's presence however opened up opportunities for Bill and he did what he had to do, knock down the shots.
The commissioner, play by play and color man extraordinare Miles Rawls called the action.
The Sweat Mob and Watts Mob are both positioning themselves for next months playoffs so every game is critical. As always this time of year, the Goodman teams are beefing up their rosters in order to get into position to make that championship run. Trades are going down, late signings, the whole nine. You never know who will suit up. Thats the beauty of the Goodman League. China maybe the only place off limits to the Goodman but every place else is fair game.
Former GW stars Pops Mensah Bansu and Chris Monroe both suited up along with Cliff, Kevin Durant, and Sweatsuit Bill.
Watts suited up Big Smooth, Tony Durant, Steve Harley (Nebraska), Delonte, Charlie Bell, and Ron.
This matchup didn't look good on paper and played itself out that way but it did get interesting for a quick minute in the first half.
The Sweat Mob jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead after Bill's 3 point bucket but the Big Smooth, who played a fabulous game for Watts, was putting in work early with a polished and fundamentally sound game. He just couldn't get the help he needed on the boards and at the guard positions in the second half.
Kevin Durant, coming off travel in China and Las Vegas, had a lot of bounce in his step during warmups but seemed to need something to motivate him and it happened. At the 14:33 mark of the first half, Durant had his shot annihilated against the backboard by the Big Smooth.
How did he respond? He responded by pumping in 12 straight points on a 3 pointer, left handed in and out dribble drive for a three point play, two dunks, and a jumper.
Durant had 20 by the 1:56 mark of the first half but the Sweat Mob only held a six point lead at halftime.
Durant cruised the second half because his teammates Pops, Cliff and Sweatsuit Bill held it down. Pops and Cliff controlled the boards while Bill sank baskets from beyond the arc.
The Sweat Mob opened up a 25 point gash when Miles called the game on a TKO at the 7:30 mark of the second half.
Chris Monroe said after the game. "He (Durant) loves the game. He loves what he does. That's what makes him special."
Sweatsuit Bill added, "I'm riding off of Kevin. He takes the pressure off everyone. It's easy playing with him."
Pops Mensah Bansu said about playing in the Goodman, " I love coming down here. DC is my second home. I'm not from here but I love the competition and giving back."
Pops, coming back from Vegas playing in their summer leagues, says 3 to 4 teams have interest in him and believes he will be signed before the season.
Plays of the game:
- 15:50 mark of the first half, SweatMob's Cliff does a beautiful outta this world ball fake. He faked to his right, then spun left and feeds the ball perfectly to Kevin Durant for a dunk.
- 14:33 mark of the first half, Watts power forward Big Smooth discombobulates Kevin Durant's shot against the backboard.
- 12:32 mark of the first half, Durant does a left handed in and out dribble that buckles the knees of his defender, finishes the layup and converts the free throw for a three point play.
- 4:57 mark of the first half, Durant catches a one handed alley oop pass and throws it down.
- 11:07 mark of the second half, Sweat Mob's Cliff throws down with legs spread like a human scissors a la Air Jordan.
