Carraway named to team for third time, Davis for second time
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four Virginia baseball student-athletes have been named to the 2008 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team. Andrew Carraway (Jr., Marietta, Ga.), Neal Davis (So., Baltimore, Md.), Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) and Jarrett Parker (Fr., Stafford, Va.) each earned a spot on the team.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.
Carraway, a commerce major, was named to the team for the third straight year and was one of six student-athletes to be selected to the squad for the third time. Davis was picked for the second-consecutive season.
Carraway went 4-3 this season with a 4.06 earned run average. In 75.1 innings and 13 starts, he walked just 12 batters while striking out 87. He ranked second in the ACC with 10.39 strikeouts per nine innings and twice earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Davis was one of UVa’s top bullpen options in 2008, going 4-0 with a 1.58 ERA. In 40 innings, he allowed 35 hits and struck out 39. Batters hit just .236 against him.
Grovatt, a freshman All-American, hit .324 with three home runs and 46 runs batted in as he played in 58 games. He finished with a Virginia freshman-record 22 doubles and fell one double short of the UVa single-season record.
Parker was the Cavaliers’ starting center fielder for much of the season. He hit .264 with 14 stolen bases in 50 games.
