SE Washington DC- Shooters was on the verge of making history as the only team to ever play in the Goodman League and finish their season undefeated including the playoffs yet head coach Lavelle Patterson was still cautious.
After defeating All Daz to advance to the title game, Patterson was cautiously optimistic about his team's chances against a relatively unknown but upstart foe in The Family. As it turned out his worries were unfounded as his Shooters team left no doubts and cruised to close out the series 2-0 and capture the 2008 Goodman League Championship.
After struggling to get his offense on track in Game 1 on Friday, Shooters superstar Andrew "The Sponge Bob" Washington resigned to involve his teammates more and not try to shoulder the bulk of the scoring load himself. "I discovered that to get the title, I needed to defer to my teammates more. Everybody was trying to double team me and fortunately my teammates stepped up."
Undoubtedly, The great Sponge Bob did get a little help from his friends namely Byron Mouton, "Pops", Gerald "Fenty" Hilliard, Marquis, & point guard "Dae Dae."
The outcome of the deciding Game 2 was never in doubt. Shooters led from the opening tip to the finish as The Sponge Bob, Byron Mouton, "Pops" ran out to an 8-1 lead in the first two minutes of the game. The Family's guard Matt Burks did manage to keep his team in Shooters rear view mirror with power drives to the basket but his team was powerless to keep Shooters off the defensive and offensive boards. Shooters raced out to a 48-28 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Family could only manage to trade baskets and couldn't get anything established on the defensive end despite the efforts of guards Matt Burks, "No Fear Kenny", and Kevin. Shooters opened up a 93-69 margin when Miles called the game at the 2:22 mark of the second half.
For Shooters and coach Lavelle Patterson, it marked a culmination of a perfect season (11-0) including two victories over a loaded All Daz team lead by Kevin Durant and Mike Beasley. Before the start of the season however, an ironic twist of events occured involving two of Patterson's star former players.
According to Patterson, Lonne "L Train" Harrell and Eric "Easy E" Brabham defected to the Roc Boys squad in an attempt to bolster their championship hopes. "I lost Lonnie and Easy E before the season. Those guys had been with me for a long time and wanted to go in another direction. It's ironic the year they leave, we win the title. Thank god for the Sponge Bob."
Patterson first thoughts and feelings about finally getting that elusive championship was," Heaven must be like this!"
The Sponge Bob added, "This was all a team effort. I'm happy to get this title but without my teammates this wouldn't have been possible."
