Predicting the Draft's Steals, Busts, and Sleepers

Myles Forsyth chimes in again on the NBA Draft and offers some more bold predictions.I believe this year’s draft will turn out to be a very unpredictable and exciting one. There is big chance we will see a lot of trades that will greatly affect where certain players are selected. But this draft, like every draft, will have a few players drafted in the late first round and in the second round, with the potential to have much more of an impact then players selected ahead of them. Here are five possible draft night steals, and five players that teams may draft too high.
Steals (Other than Mike “Mr. Effeciency” Gansey and Kevin “Don’t call me Kwinsie” Pittsnogle)-
Will Blalock PG- While at Iowa State Blalock showed a great knack for the brilliant pass. While his jumper is a little inconsistent, Blalock is an extremely athletic guard who can really press the break and has court vision rivaling Marcus Williams’.He may be able to squeeze into the bottom of the first round with the Lakers and Cavaliers both in need of point guard help.If I were the Rockets I would definitely pick him up at number 32.
Denham Brown SG- Overshadowed by the other UCONN stars, Brown always played solidly and improved in each of his four seasons in Connecticut. He is a very good perimeter defender with above average strength and an improving mid-range game.My prediction is this Canadian born player will return home when Toronto uses their 35th selection to nab him.
James White SG/SF- One of the best athletes in the draft, James White uses his 6’7” frame and freakish leaping ability and speed to get out on the break and finish. With improved ball handling and shooting, he has all the physical tools to be a solid NBA player. The Jazz, Sonics, and Bucks are possibilities for White in the early to mid second round.
Jordan Farmar PG- Farmar has really boosted his stock by being the best player at the Orlando draft camp, and with his posting, and incredible, 42 inch vertical leap.He showed great leadership ability by bringing UCLA to the championship game and might find his way into the lottery at 13, but most likely with Indiana at 17.No way he falls past the Nets with picks 22 and 23.
Brandon Bowman SF- Bowman is a great complimentary player who can do a little bit of everything. He has excellent strength and athleticism allowing him to be an effective defender and finish on the break. He is also solid with the ball and can find open teammates. The Hornets, Jazz, and Wizards are all possibilities for him in the second round, with an outside chance going higher if a team falls in love with him.
Busts/ Should have stayed in school
Patrick O’Bryant C- Watching him play in the NCAA tournament was painful for me.To see this kid, used to using his seven foot frame against weak competition in the MVC, tripping over himself was pathetic.Sure, he had a couple of good performances but he will get bullied in the NBA and seems to be too goofy to develop good footwork in the post.
Rajon Rondo PG- I think that Blalock and Farmar are much better than Rondo.I don’t believe in his ability to run a team and his jumper is unbelievably bad.He is an unbelievable athlete, but that doesn’t make him a great player. He could prove me wrong and become the next Tony Parker.
Shawne Williams SF- Williams definitely needs some more school.I don’t know why kids play for Calipari, the guy is a dirtbag and does not produce good pros.Williams is too skinny and too raw offensively for the NBA.He will not be able to rely on his athleticism like he did in college.
Darius Washington PG- Another Memphis player, Washington is not as misguided as his teammate Shawne because he has not hired an agent and can return to school if and when he goes undrafted.
Guillermo Diaz SG/PG- Diaz is undersized, and while he developed a reputation as a three point shooter at Miami, he has funky mechanics that I don’t see working out to NBA range. He is a nice looking athlete but does he have point guard skills?
Three Sleepers
Joel Freeland PF- Freeland is a seven foot athlete from England.Little was known about him until recently. He is only 19 and will probably stay in Europe to add bulk and mature as with most European big men.He is supposed to have a pretty good jumper and very good leaping and running ability.
Jose Juan Barea PG- I saw this smallish, but extremely quick point guard play in some international games for Puerto Rico.He played his college ball for Northeastern in the CAA (same conference as George Mason) where he was named player of the year after averaging 21 points and eight assists per game. Barea has worked out for eight NBA teams, and even if he goes undrafted, will probably be given a spot on a summer league team.
Alexander Johnson PF- He had a less than stellar career at Florida State but is a bruiser physically and has explosive athleticism. He has been skyrocketing up draft boards with the potential he has shown in workouts.I put him in the first round in my latest mock draft.
