For the first time in many years Virginia Tech was "out Beamered" by an opposing team. The Hokies, traditionally known for it's standout defensive play and stalwart special teams execution, actually struggled offensively coupled with the fact of starting relatively young and inexperienced players at the skill postions.
QB Sean Glennon was named the starter before the season but showed signs of flailing confidence. The decision was made to redshirt Tyrod Taylor who played as a true freshman. Glennon came on towards the end of the 2007 season and led Tech to the ACC Championship and the 08 Orange Bowl where they lost to Kansas but the questions remain. Can a relatively inexperienced team that lost 10 players to the NFL make the entire season without the services of Taylor, a more mobile threat who can create in a spread offensive formation?
Early signs show the ACC doesn't look strong from top to bottom but one more poor offensive showing could cause Coach Frank Beamer to re-evaluate his decision. College football is too competitive not to keep your best athletes on the field. There's no word out of Blacksburg yet.
West Virginia's Pat White threw for five touchdowns albeit against a weaker opponent in Villanova, but could set the stage for a Heisman run if he keeps this pace up against stronger Big East competitors. The real question remains whether or not Pat White can compete at quarterback at the next level or will be relagated to wide receiver and special teams.
New Michigan Head Coach Rich Rodriguez's debut was spoiled by the likes of Utah quarterback Brian Johnson. It could be a long season for Rodriguez and the Wolverines as he rebuilds an offense and defense ravaged by graduation and the NFL. Word is that Mountaineer nation is gloating.
Ohio State's Heisman hopeful Chris "Beanie" Wells went down with an apparently foot injury that doesn't appear to be serious unfortunately he could miss the long awaited matchup with USC. Good news for Buckeyes was the impressive debut of high recruited true freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Pryor showed flashes of things to come by completing 4 of 6 passing attempts for 35 yards and nine rushing attempts for 52.
If Pryor can play now and contribute why keep him off the field?
Check back every Sunday for the college football wrapup.
