Games at Auburn, Hawai’i Highlight Schedule
WASHINGTON, DC — The George Washington University has announced its 2008-09 men’s basketball schedule, which includes high-profile non-conference games at Auburn, against Maryland at Washington’s Verizon Center in the BB&T Classic, and at the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow
Under eighth-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW opens the season Nov. 14 on the road at Boston University followed by the home opener against Binghamton at Charles E. Smith Center on Nov. 19. GW will see a familiar face when it welcomes the Bearcats in former GW assistant coach Kevin Broadus, now in his second season at Binghamton.
GW travels to Auburn, AL, on Nov. 22 to face the Tigers in a rematch of last year’s 74-70 contest in the BB&T Classic. The Colonials return to Smith Center to host UMBC on Nov. 26, in the first of potentially 13 games against opponents who qualified for the 2008 postseason.
On Dec. 7 the Colonials take on local rival Maryland at the Verizon Center as part of a doubleheader with Navy going against Virginia Tech in the 14th Annual BB&T Classic.
After home games with Harvard and NCAA Tournament participant American, the Colonials will travel to Sacramento, CA, to play Sacramento State Dec. 23 before continuing to Honolulu to compete in the 45th Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic at the University of Hawai’i. Other teams in the Rainbow Classic field include Colorado, Colorado State, Coppin State, Pepperdine, Vermont and the host Rainbow Warriors of Hawai’i. Pairings will be announced at a later date.
The Colonials will play five games against opponents from the 2008 NCAA Tournament field when they face American, UMBC, Xavier, Temple and Saint Joseph’s at the Palestra. A potential sixth game against an NCAA Tournament opponent could take place in Hawai’i if the Colonials face Coppin State in the Rainbow Classic. The Colonials also will play six games against opponents from the 2008 NIT field in Dayton, two with Charlotte, Rhode Island, Maryland and Massachusetts, which advanced to the NIT final before losing to Ohio State in Madison Square Garden. GW also plays a pair of games with Richmond, which competed in last year’s inaugural College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
After the Atlantic 10 expanded to a 14-team league prior to the 2005-06 season, a new scheduling format was adopted. This season, GW will play a home-and-home series against Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Dayton, Fordham, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure and ‘Senior Night’ against Temple in addition to the home games with Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. GW will travel to Duquesne, Massachusetts, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Louis and Xavier. The Saint Joseph’s game will take place at Philadelphia’s storied Palestra while the Saint Louis game will be played in the new Chaifetz Arena.
