MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 15, 2008) – Freshman Alex Silva’s goal was all the offense the West Virginia University men’s soccer team needed to upset No. 22 Ohio State, 1-0, on Wednesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,123.

Less than nine minutes into the game, Ohio State was whistled for a foul, giving WVU (4-5-4, 2-2-3 BIG EAST) a free kick. From approximately 25-yards out near the far corner of the 18-yard box, Silva blasted a line-drive shot toward the near past that whizzed past Ohio State goalkeeper Byron Neal. It is Silva’s second goal of the season, also the Brazilian’s second against a ranked opponent.

In goal, sophomore Zach Johnson was nothing short of spectacular. The Lumberton , N.J. , native made six saves, including a few that required him to make diving stops. With the shutout, Johnson improves his season total to seven.

The Mountaineers return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 18, for a match against Seton Hall. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
