MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 18, 2008) – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team played Seton Hall to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on a chilly Saturday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The double-overtime result is the fifth this year for the Mountaineers.
WVU (4-5-5, 2-2-4 BIG EAST) was forced to play with only 10 players for a span of 72:22 after junior Ryan Gillespie was sent off with a red card.
“For us to go that long without giving up a goal and playing a man down and fighting like the way we did, I’m proud of Zach (Johnson) and proud of the team,” Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc said.
Nevertheless, the team continued to battle and put the first tally on the scoreboard at the 60:29 mark.
Freshman Adam Mills scored his second goal of the season on what LeBlanc described as “the best goal we have scored this year.” Sophomore Paul Paradise put a through ball to Mills and after splitting two defenders, Mills sent a blast past Seton Hall Paul McHenry for the score.
Seton Hall (6-6-3, 2-3-3) answered back with less than five minutes in regulation. Although a WVU defender tried to clear the ball out of the box, the ball rolled to Seton Hall’s Jerry Saintil, who sent a shot to the far post that went off WVU goalkeeper Zach Johnson’s fingertips and into the back of the net.
“We could be standing here saying we very easily should have had three points, but in this situation, any coach takes a draw,” LeBlanc said. “We’re pleased to get a point out of this game, and certainly still are in contention for a BIG EAST Tournament spot.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 21, for a non-conference match against No. 6/6 Maryland . Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on WVPBS.
