Mountaineers Fall to Duquesne in Five

            MORGANTOWN , W.Va. (Oct. 19, 2008) - The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Duquesne today at the A. J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

 
The Dukes (15-8, 3-4 Atlantic 10) defeated the Mountaineers (6-14, 0-7 BIG EAST) in a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-7) match.

 

            In set two, the Mountaineers posted an 8-6 lead over the Dukes after a kill from freshman outside hitter Kylie Armbruster. WVU continued to lead throughout the set and won after a kill from senior middle blocker Lisa Hough, followed by an attack error from Duquesne’s Jessica Artman.

 

            WVU started set four off 3-0 after a service ace from sophomore libero Bonnie West. The Mountaineers maintained a strong lead going on a 6-0 run fueled by an assisted block from senior middle blocker Tammy Wolf and junior outside hitter Abby Raines to put the score at 16-6. Hough ended the set with a kill to send the match into set five.

 

            A kill by Armbruster and another by Raines put the Mountaineers up 2-1 in set five, however, despite their efforts, the Mountaineers could not hold on as the Dukes put up seven kills with a .333 hitting percentage to win the match.

 

            Wolf led the Mountaineers with 13 kills, while Armbruster followed with 11. Sophomore libero Bonnie West led in digs (28) and service aces (4).

 

            As a team the Mountaineers posted 50 kills, 72 digs and six total blocks.
