BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department will honor former Tech player and unanimous All-American Jake Grove in a pre-game ceremony Saturday before the Cincinnati game on the field. Grove will have his jersey retired, becoming the fourth former Hokie to receive this honor.
In 2002, the athletics department developed a new policy on retiring football jerseys. This special honor is bestowed to acknowledge an individual who won an established award in their sport, while allowing the number to be worn by others. Grove won the Rimington Award, presented to the nation's top collegiate center, following the 2003 season. Tech no longer retires numbers, however, Nos. 10 (Frank Loria), 73 (Jim Pyne), 78 (Bruce Smith) and 84 (Carroll Dale) had previously been retired,
Three other ceremonies have been held: Michael Vick on Sept. 1, 2002 prior to a win over LSU; Frank Beamer on Sept. 12, 2002 prior to a win over Marshall; and Cornell Brown on Nov. 20, 2002 prior to the West Virginia game.
The ceremony will take place following the National Anthem and prior to the Hokies' entrance to the field. |
