ACC Football Players of the WeekMonday, October 30, 2006 OFFENSIVE BACKIn earning the award for the second time this season, Virginia Tech tailback Branden Ore played a major role in the Hokies’ 24-7 upset win over 10th-ranked Clemson last Thursday night. The Chesapeake, Va., sophomore rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns on a career-high 37 carries against a defense that came into the game allowing just an average of 72.0 yards per game - seventh best in the country. Ore was credited with 13 broken tackles and also caught a 7-yard pass. OFFENSIVE LINEVirginia guard Branden Albert was tabbed ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week for his play in the Cavaliers’ 14-7 win over visiting NC State Saturday. The 6-7, 306-pound sophomore from Glen Burnie, Md., graded out at 78 percent and had key blocks on both of Jason Snelling's rushing touchdowns in the Cavaliers’ 14-7 win over NC State. DEFENSIVE LINEMaryland defensive end Jeremy Navarre and Georgia Tech middle linebacker Philip Wheeler share ACC Defensive Lineman of the week honors. Navarre had five tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss in the Terps’ 27-24 victory over Florida State Saturday. In addition, the Joppatowne, Md., sophomore blocked a 46-yard field goal attempt by the Seminoles with 38 seconds left that would have tied the game. Wheeler led an outstanding defensive effort as the 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets defeated visiting Miami 30-23 to take the lead in the ACC Coastal Division. The junior from Columbus, Ga., had six tackles and three of Tech's six sacks for 22 yards in losses. Wheeler leads the ACC in tackles for loss (12.5) and ranks second in sacks (8.0). DEFENSIVE BACKIn earning the award for the second time in three weeks, Wake Forest defensive back Josh Gattis turned in an outstanding effort in Saturday’s 24-17 win over North Carolina. The Durham, N.C., senior had a career-high 13 tackles, including eight in the first quarter, made an interception in the second quarter and recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter that set-up Wake Forest's go-ahead touchdown. Gattis has had an interception in three straight games. SPECIALISTGeorgia Tech punter Durant Brooks averaged 50.8 yards with a net of 45.2 yards on six punts in Saturday’s 30-23 win over Miami. The Macon, Ga., junior had a key 63-yard punt in the third quarter and three of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. Also the holder on placements, Brooks grabbed a high snap and got it down for placekicker Travis Bell, who booted a 39-yard field in the fourth-quarter field goal that tied the score at 16-all. Brooks leads the ACC in punting average (44.8) and punting net (41.2). ROOKIE Maryland wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey had two touchdown catches in the Terps’ 27-24 victory over Florida State Saturday. The Silver Spring, Md., freshman had a team-high three catches for 57 yards, including scoring receptions of 30 and five yards, as Maryland became bowl-eligible with its sixth win of the season. |
