BOWL GAME
Virginia Tech has officially been released by
the BCS, according to the Orlando Sentinel, which means that the
Chick-Fil-A Bowl is pretty much guaranteed to pick Virginia Tech as its
ACC representative. Who they play in that bowl is still very much
in the air. If the SEC gets two BCS teams, very likely if WVU
beats Rutgers and Louisville is the Big East champ, then the Hokies
will face Georgia. If the SEC only manages to get one team into a
BCS game, then the Hokies most likely opponent will be Tennessee.
Either way, Tech will get to finish against a ranked SEC team, which
certainly will be a great game.
ALL-ACC TEAM
Three Hokies were named to the first-team
All-ACC team on Monday. Braden Ore, Brandon Flowers, and Vince
Hall all made the first team. Ore finished second in the ACC in
rushing yards, even though he played behind an inconsistent offensive
line and missed two games due to injury. Flowers was arguably the
best cover corner in the ACC as he led the conference in pass
deflections by a wide margin. Hall led the conference in tackles
and was the best player for the Hokies all year long. Hall has
the chance to be an honorable mention All-American this year, and could
be the best linebacker in the nation next year. Brandon Pace,
Xavier Adibi, Eddie Royal, and Duane Brown all made the second
team. Of the seven Hokies, only Pace graduates, while the rest
are underclassmen.
COACHING CAROUSEL
Virginia Tech could see Bud Foster leave this
year for a head coaching position. He said he has yet to be
contacted, but one would think he will be in the near future.
Cincinnati seems like the best fit for Foster, who is from that
area.
Bud Foster has been nominated for the Broyles
Award, best assistant coach in the country, for the fourth time in his
career. He was nominated last year, but lost out to Gene Chiczk,
former Texas defensive coordinator. Foster led the Tech defense
to another first place finish in pass defense, total defense and
scoring defense this year, and is the frontrunner to claim the trophy
for the first time.
Frank Beamer has shot down rumors that he has
been contacted Alabama for their head coaching vacancy. Beamer
has twice been a part of the Alabama coaching process in 1996 and last
time around in 2000. I do not think Beamer will ever leave Tech,
especially after he got a new contract and with all the additions to
Lane Stadium
BASKETBALL
ACC/BIG 10 CHALLENGE
The Hokies host Iowa tonight as part of the
ACC/Big 10 Challenge. The Hokies could be the clinching win for
the ACC if Boston College were to beat Michigan State before the Tech
game ended. Tech is 3-2, after a disappointing sixth place finish
in the Old Spice Classic
COLLINS TO COME OFF THE BENCH
Coach Seth Greenberg has decided to sit Coleman
Collins and start Cheick Diakite instead. Collins was supposed to
be a senior leader and the best player for the Hokies, but has not been
very good this year. Many speculate that he is still dealing with
the death of his father from last year. The Hokies will need
Collins to play up to his talent level, if they expect to have the kind
of season they want.
