Locally

The Georgetown Hoyas, Maryland Terrapins, Virginia Cavaliers, & Virginia Tech Hokies prepare for their prospective league tournaments.  Although all above teams should make the Tournament of 64 the results of the ACC and Big East will be important as they determine the seedings.


George Mason loses in their bid to win the CAA Tourney which will probably hurt their chances of making the field of 64. 

The Redskins sign Fred Smoot and take a visit from Luke Pettigout, former offensive lineman with the Giants who was cut from their roster.

The Wizards win two games this week over the Warriors of Golden State and the Raptors of Toronto to bring their record to 33 and 25.  This is good for third in the Eastern Conference.

The Nationals continue to work there way thru spring training but early results lean to a long term rebuilding plan.

The Capitals are looking down the barrel of a third straight none playoff season but team majority owner is confident of his long term turnaround plan.

The DeMatha Stags win the Boys City Championship game 71-37 for its third consecutive city title victory.  Austin Freeman led the Stags with 23 points.  Rafiel Guthrie led the Clerks with 15.

 

Across the nation

NCAA Basketball

North Carolina defeated Duke for the second straight outing 86-72.  Tyler Hansbrough had 26 points and 17 rebounds despite a bloody nose from Duke's Gerald Henderson.

The nationwide college basketball tournaments kick off this weekend as we prepare for Selection Sunday.

 

NFL

Travis Henry agreed to a five year contract with the Denver Broncos.

Thomas Jones goes to the New York Jets in a trade with the Chicago Bears for two draft picks. The Titans resign QB Kerry Collins.  Collins will backup Vince Young.

The Patriots traded draft choices to the Dolphins for wide receiver Wes Welker.

Former Viking QB Brad Johnson agreed to terms with the Cowboys.  Johnson will backup Tony Romo.

San Francisco picked up Ashley Lelie from the Atlanta Falcons.

Miami signed Jerry Porter to a contract with terms that include $20 million guaranteed money.

 

NBA

The Dallas Mavericks win 16 straight to improve to the best record in the league.

Rumors of the displeasure with Carmelo Anthony's play has caused stirs that Coach

George Karl may bench his star forward until he can play more team oriented basketball.

Lakers are entertaining the overtures of 41 year old Scotty Pippen.  Pippen wants to return to the league but on a contending team. 

 

NASCAR

Juan Pablo Montoya, Nascar's first Latino driver got his first win in the Busch Series Telcel-Motorola 200.  Early buzz has it that Nascar has witnessed its next big star.

 

Miscellaneous

The Florida Pharmacy probe widened as eleven people pleaded not guilty to the illegal sale of steroids.  The case has linked the online drug network to doctors and health care centers in three states.  Reportedly Major League Baseball players Gary Matthews Jr, Jerry Hairston Jr., Jose Conseco and Evander Holyfield were on a customer list at Applied Pharmacy in Alabama, one of two pharmacies raided.
