Washington, D.C. ─ The Georgetown University men’s basketball team will host three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year and will play games against nine teams that advanced to the postseason as the BIG EAST Conference announced the league opponents for each of its men’s basketball teams for the 2007-08 regular season.
In 2007-08, the BIG EAST will play an 18-game conference schedule after playing a 16-game slate for the last eight seasons. The 18-game format will allow teams to play each opponent once and three teams twice.
“It’s good that each team is playing every other team,” Commissioner Michael Tranghese said. “It makes the conference schedule more balanced and we are still able to make some very attractive and intriguing matchups a second time.”
The Hoyas will play home-and-home series against 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Louisville as well as traditional league rivals St. John’s and Syracuse, a 2007 NIT participant.š Other home contests include Cincinnati, Connecticut, Notre Dame (NCAA), Seton Hall, South Florida and Villanova (NCAA)
In addition to road games against Louisville, St. John’s and Syracuse, the Blue and Gray will travel to play at DePaul (NIT), Marquette (NCAA), Pittsburgh (NCAA), Providence (NIT), Rutgers and West Virginia (NIT).
The decisions regarding repeat opponents are based on natural interest, geography, rivalries and television contractual obligations. The BIG EAST has not played an 18-game conference schedule since 1998-99, when the league had 13 members.
