Washington, D.C. Georgetown University football players have been keeping alumni, family and fans up-to-date on the team's summer workouts until camp starts in August. Each week, a different member of the Hoyas has provided the latest information as the team gets ready for the 2007 season. This week, senior defensive back Darren Alberti (Menlo Park, Calif./Atherton) provides the final update before camp starts next week.

“It’s been a summer of hard work for the 2007 Hoyas, and credit should be given where credit is due. If you have read these journals before, you’ve probably noticed the recurring theme that some of my teammates have expressed about just how long these days can be.

“The grind of getting up early to catch the bus or Metro to our jobs throughout D.C., working all day, and then scrambling back to make it on time for the 6:15 p.m. lift occasionally took its toll. But day-in and day-out, the team trained with a level of intensity and focus that makes a successful and mature football team. For this, the 2007 Hoyas have Augie Maurelli to thank.

“His work generally goes unseen, but every day without fail, Augie brought a wave of enthusiasm and energy that simply carried the team through the workout. He would accept nothing less than our maximum effort, and, as some of the freshman quickly figured out – if you’re going to work with Augie, you better come ready to train or else just don’t even bother showing up.

“He has this 2007 team physically and mentally ready to play. All the lifts, the runs, the 7-on-7 scrimmages, the early Friday mornings – they have all helped to develop a confidence and swagger for this team as we head into camp.

“We’re excited to get the guys who were away for the summer back and equally excited to welcome the rest of the incoming freshmen to the team. I guess there’s nothing too much left to say. We have this last week before camp off to rest up before getting to work August 6. There is still a lot of work left to do, but we can’t wait to get this 2007 season started September 1 against Stony Brook.”

On Wednesday, Head Coach Kevin Kelly and the team’s captains – offensive leaders Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wis./Port Edwards) and Kyle Van Fleet (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) and defensive leaders Nnamdi Obiako (Bladensburg, Md./Bladensburg) and Stephen Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) – will head up to Bethlehem, Pa., where they will meet with assembled media for Patriot League Media Day.
