A washed out Sunday didn't deter the Goodman faithful from promptly showing up on Monday to witness a top ten play bonanza of streetball at its finest. The undefeated All Daz Mob took on a high powered 3rd Eye Inc Mob otherwise known as Da Grew^p. If you had checked the Goodman website www.thegoodmanleague.com, you would have found out Gil and the boys came out to do their stuff under the Monday night lights at the BF Coliseum.
For the Goodman faithful, you know when you hear All Daz is playing, it means Gilbert
Arenas (Agent Zero), Curt "Trouble" Smith, and Brian "The Assassin" Chase. This time
All Daz added none other that "Baby Shack" and McDonald's High School All American
Syracuse recruit and Baltimore native Donte Green. On paper it looked to be a TKO for
All Daz.
But wait a minute, wait one minute. Da Grew^p had some high caliber assault weapons of their own. Try Young Zo, Terrence Whiters of East Baltimore, Eddie Basden (E. Roosevelt, Charlotte, Chicago Bulls, Toronto, overseas), D-Nice at guard, and David Hawkins (Temple, professionally overseas).
With the rain in check, a sold out crowd including former Georgetown Hoyas head
coach John Thompson were awaiting the 8pm tipoff. DJ Stormin Normin as always and
as advertised, ran the one's and two's. Miles gave the command "Move em!"
Miles Rawls called the play by play. Arenas caught a pass off the tipoff and gave a quick assist for the first two points off the break. Terrence Whiters from the Grew^p followed with a jumper. All Daz were without the services of guard Tre Kelley because of a previous engagement but like AllState they were in good hands with Trouble Smith and Brian Chase.
Da Grew^p jumped out to an early 15-6 lead as the two lightning quick guards Whiters (Arkansas Tech) and D-Nice along with Basden seized control. Trouble Smith converted a bucket on a nice hesitation dribble layup, Donte Green had a dunk and a put back, but Da Grew^p opened up a 20-8 lead primarily because Brian Chase, theAll Daz assassin was cold from the field early.
Trouble Smith got a bucket, Terrence came right back with a two. Whiters by the way had a monster game, his speed and penetrating ability collasped the All Daz defense all evening. Baby Shack scored on a layup to make it 22-14 with 13:13 left in the first half. Chase missed two three point attempts and Arenas missed a couple putbacks. Arenas, while looking better, is still working his knee back into shape. Donte Green got a dunk off an inbound with one hand.
All Daz slowly began to gain traction. Trouble Smith scored on a sweet turnaround jump hook. Chase then hit a three pointer. Smith made a beautiful teardrop shot. Baby Shack converted a free throw to tie the game 25-25. Grew^p's David Hawkins and Eddie B. each scored baskets to regain the lead 32-27.
The action was rough and rugged as each team scored buckets. The action was so fast Miles himself couldn't keep up. Terrence Whiters, D-Nice and Eddie Basden of the Grew^p drove the offense. Baby Shack and Donte Green added shots for All Daz. D-Nice was too quick for the All Daz Mob all game long.
Eddie Basden made two buckets, Trouble Smith made a sweet assist off a back down
to Alpha for a dunk. Chase scored off a spin move to bring the score to 60-52 at halftime.
The second half began with Donte Green blocking a shot. A Chase layup cut the lead
to 63-54. Basden made a spurt with a dunk, free throws, and another bucket. All Daz hung in there as Shack and Chase converted free throws and buckets. Eddie Basden threw down a monstrous alley-oop dunk to make the score 71-66.
Brian Chase started to warm up in the second half as he dueled with Terrence Whiters
from Da Grew^p. Chase got to the line frequently in the second as he began to dominate
the action on the offensive side of the ball for All Daz.
Aside from the duel of the super guards, the other game within a game came from Baby
Shack of All Daz and David Hawkins of Da Grew^p. Both have very similar builds and
explosive power games. Hawkins and Shack traded baskets back and forth.
The stars down the stretch for Da Grew^p were Whiters and Eddie Basden. All Daz
couldn't halt his driving layups. Basden converted at the line when it counted. Chase dominated for All Daz with Gilbert getting into the action on some layups and putbacks and showed us a glimpse of his explosiveness. He will ready by the time the season starts folks.
Both teams traded buckets down the stretch. With 2:45 left in the game,. David Hawkins
tied the score 109-109. Basden converted one free throw after a Trouble Smith basket.
Hawkins dunked, then Chase hit a three pointer to tie the score at 112-112. Basden hit two free throws with 9.2 seconds left but Young Zo fouled Chase with four on
the clock. Chase hit both free throws to send the game into overtime.
In OT Arenas got a put back followed by a Basden basket. Whiters went coast to coast
for Da Grew^p for a 124-123 lead. Donte Green hit a free throw to bring the score to
124-124 tie. Basden sealdc the game in OT with a free throw with 7 seconds left in OT.
All Daz couldn't get the last bucket as they went down by the final score of 125-124.
Terrence Whiters, the dynamic guard from East Baltimore gave me his thoughts on the
game. "All in all it was a good game, a great atmosphere. It was good competing with a
player the caliber of Brian Chase. I have lots of respect for him. This builds my confidence that I can play on another level."
analysis.
