BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech football team and coaching staff took an afternoon off from preseason camp to help raise money for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund by holding a charity car wash at the Tech Softball Park parking lot. The first car rolled into the lot at 3:43 p.m., and the last one left just after 6:15 p.m. In that span, the group washed 178 vehicles and raised just over $4,000, all of which goes to the Spirit Fund.
All 105 players on the preseason roster, plus all nine full-time assistant coaches and head coach Frank Beamer participated in the event. The first session featured 49 players and the 10 coaches washing over 100 vehicles from 3:45-5 p.m. The second group of 56 players and 10 coaches washed the remaining automobiles from 5-6:15 p.m.
The team will hold its second open scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday at Lane Stadium. Stretching begins at 3:15 p.m., and the scrimmage will begin around 3:45 p.m.
