Devine Fitting In Nicely; Two Players Suspended

It is not easy being an incoming freshman on a big time college football team.  The players are faster, bigger, and smarter.  Noel Devine has seemed to find a comfort in knowing that he is just as fast, big, and smart as the guys he will be playing against.

“I am getting real comfortable with the offense, we will get it down pat,” said Devine.

Getting comfortable with the offense has been an easy process for a player with as much talent as Devine, but he is also getting acclimated with West Virginia and the program as well.

“You gotta love the program,” said Devine, “You look around, nice people, nice facilities, this is where I can better myself at the most.”

And not only will he be helping himself out, but will be playing a back-up role, something Devine has never done.  He admits that it will be different, but that there is more to the game than one man.  “It’s a team thing, you know…you just gotta be patient and your time will come.”

Having Devine as a back-up to Steve Slaton should give Rich Rodriguez a few extra hours of sleep at night knowing that he has a capable running back on the bench.  However, Noel will not only being playing a back up role but will likely be returning kicks from time-to-time during the season.  Devine was a dangerous kick returner in high school, as seen in videos on sites like YouTube and Rivals.com, and looks to add a new dimension to the special teams as well.  When asked if he has watched the videos online Devine stated, “No, I try stay level headed, not get a big head you know because people will start down talking and I try to stay away from all that.”

Devine ran for nearly 7,000 yards and over 90 touchdowns in high school but he says that he is looking forward to improving and leaving those numbers behind.

“That was high school, that’s all in the past, I am trying to do better things here.  That is the past and I am trying to better my future.”

His future certainly looks bright.  However, on the other side of the spectrum two WVU players were arrested and charged for stealing a laptop computer from a party over the weekend.  The two players J.T. Thomas and transfer Ellis Lankster have been suspended from the team for an undetermined amount of time.  Thomas was expecting to play a big role in the linebacking core this fall and is a third generation Mountaineer.  Lankster, a Junior College All American, was expected to help a secondary that gave up big yards through the air a year ago.  It is likely that if convicted, the two will be dismissed from the program.
