2007 College Football: Virginia Tech Freshman Tyrod Taylor Looks Good Early

Tyrod Taylor (Hampton High School) rated one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the nation last year has been looking very promising according to reports out of Blacksburg, Va. Taylor has looked so good in fact that the coaching staff is considering whether or not to redshirt him this year.

According to updates on the depth charts, Taylor has moved up into the No. 2 quarterback position behind Sean Glennon. In his first scrimmage, Taylor completed 6/10 for 30 yards but showed his talent on a play where he avoided a rush, dodged several tackles and ran 15 yards downfield before being shoved out of bounds.

Taylor did throw an interception in the scrimmage but later mentioned, "I think I played pretty well.  I learned some things but overall I think I did well." Coach Frank Beamer seems impressed with the freshman's obvious level of talent.

Although Glennon has the starting QB spot locked down, it makes sense to get Taylor ready if they need his services. Ike Whitaker, a redshirt sophomore quarterback has been switched to the wide receiver position because that's where Beamer thinks he can best help the team.

Taylor lead the Hampton High Crabbers to a state championship his junior year. Taylor and his bunch  were on a march to capture their second crown but were upset in the playoffs by Maury. Taylor, and two other top high school quarterbacks were profiled on the NFL Network special earlier this year.  His high school coach Mike Smith describes Taylor as an athletic and grounded individual who should represent the school well.

Stay tuned Hokie fans, it looks like Taylor is generation next for a few years to come.

DC Metro Sports will be following Taylor and the Hokies along with other colleges in the area this year.
